Millikin Men’s Basketball Fall in Battle with Titans

         The Millikin men's basketball team lost an epic College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) battle to Illinois Wesleyan 76-74 on February 5 at the Griswold Center in Decatur, Illinois.
         The first half was all Millikin with the Big Blue taking a 46-33 lead into the halftime locker room.  Millikin shot 58 percent (18-31) from the field in the first half making 6-12 from three-point range.  Illinois Wesleyan was held to 46 percent (13-28) in the first half and went 0-7 from beyond the arc.
         Illinois Wesleyan battled back in the second half outscoring the Big Blue 22-11 over the first eight minutes to make it a 57-55 Millikin advantage.  Troy Burrows would push the Millikin lead back to five points with a three-pointer making it 60-55.  Millikin would push the lead to six points with eight minutes left in the game, but the Titans would again make a run.  Illinois Wesleyan took its first lead of the game with 5:50 remaining 66-65 after a three-pointer by Cory Noe.  Burrows tied the game with a three-pointer at 72-72 with 2:13 left in the game.  Matthew Leritz answered for the Titans to make it 74-72 Illinois Wesleyan with 1:54 to play.  Millikin's Zach Fisher tied the game at 74-74 with a basket with 1:21 remaining.  Both teams missed free throw opportunities in the final minute.  The Titans would go 2-4 from the line in the final 26 seconds to secure the victory with Peter Lambesis going 1-2 to put Illinois Wesleyan on top.
         Millikin shot 47.5 percent (28-59) from the field and made 10-26 (38.5 percent) from three-point range.  The Titans shot 55 percent from the field in the second half and ended the game shooting 51 percent (28-55) going 4-18 (22 percent) from the free throw line.  Illinois Wesleyan went 16-27 from the free throw line while Millikin made 8-13.  Millikin won the rebounding battle 40-30.
         Fisher led Millikin with 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists.  Burrows added 15 points.  Michael Akinwumi had a double double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
         Illinois Wesleyan's top scorer was Leritz with 21 followed by Charlie Bair with 15 and Lambesis with 14.
         Millikin is now 4-17, 1-11 while the Titans improve to 14-6, 8-3.
         The Big Blue close out the home portion of the season on Saturday, February 8 hosting Carthage College at 7 p.m.
