Women's Volleyball Bested by Illinois Wesleyan

The #20 Big Blue women's volleyball team matched up against College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin foe Illinois Wesleyan University on Friday, October 1 in Decatur, Ill. at the Griswold Center. Millikin was bested in three sets by IWU (26-28, 12-25, 19-25). 

The Big Blue was led by Tori Stuart at the net with eight kills. Kamryn Flesner added six kills, and Lauren Brummel chipped in five. Kailee Itzenhuiser led Millikin in two categories with 12 digs and two service aces. Olivia Grbavac tallied 11 set assists, and Sophia Gibbs led Millikin in blocks with five total. 

The Titans' Courtney McAuliffe tallied the top number of kills on the night with 11, and Jessica McCall added 10. Faith Washko led Illinois Wesleyan in digs with 15. 

In the first set, the Big Blue started out 2-0 after a kill off the hand of Itzenhuiser and a service ace by Itzenhuiser. Millikin pushed the lead to 7-2 on a service ace by Grbavac, then 10-3 on a block by Gibbs and Itzenhuiser. The Titans slowly chipped away at the Big Blue lead, first with McCall behind the service line to bring the score to 10-6. Wesleyan once again used a short run to pull within one at 12-11. The set saw six tied scores after 18-18. Illinois Wesleyan used a block by Madi Corey and McAuliffe to swing the momentum late in the set and defeat MU 26-28.

Set two saw the Titans quickly pull ahead 12-5 and never look back. A block by Dana Kiszkowski and McAuliffe put the Titans up seven, and a short run with Riley Cross behind the service line brought the score to 21-11. The Titans finished out the set on a 4-0 run. 

Illinois Wesleyan followed suit in the final set of the match, going on a nine point run early in the set after Millikin had gotten out to a 3-1 lead on a kill by Brummel. The Big Blue used a late-game run with Julianna Vassallo behind the service line to put Millikin within two. The run was highlighted by back-to-back-to-back blocks, two by Gibbs and one by Stuart, and brought the score to 19-21 with the Titans in the lead. After a timeout by IWU, the Titans were able to side out with a kill by McAuliffe then finish out the set 19-25 for the sweep. 

With the loss, the Big Blue fell to 11-5 on the season, 2-1 in the CCIW. Illinois Wesleyan improved to 9-9 overall, 3-1 in the CCIW. Millikin will look to bounce back against Wheaton College in another home CCIW matchup on Wednesday, October 6 at 7:00 PM in the Griswold Center.
