Big Blue Women's Volleyball's Comeback Stifled by Thunder

The Big Blue women's volleyball team mounted a comeback against the Wheaton Thunder on Wednesday, October 6 at the Griswold Center, but their efforts were stifled by the Thunder in the fifth set. 

Millikin fell behind 0-2 before taking two straight sets to forth the fifth set. Millikin was led by Kamryn Flesner and Tori Stuart with 12 kills apiece. Lauren Brummel added 11 kills and three blocks. Sophia Howell tallied three service aces, and Jessi Kreder led the team in blocks with seven, while Flesner chipped in four. Reece Brown was the Big Blue assists leader with 42, and Grace Knowski tallied the top number of digs with 12. Anna Deutschmann added 11, and Stuart tallied 10. 

The Thunder jumped out to a hot start, taking an early 6-3 lead over the Big Blue. They extended their lead to 9-4 on a block by Caroline Capps and Kaylee Byerly. Wheaton used a kill by Colleen Smith to end the set for a 25-20 win. 

Millikin started off with the momentum in the second set, taking a 4-0 lead with Kailee Itzenhuiser behind the service line. Wheaton quickly tied things up at eight with a kill by Ashton Major, and pulled ahead 10-8. The Big Blue equalized the score at 10 with a block by Kreder and Brummel, and traded three-point runs for a 13-13 tie, highlighted by a block by Stuart and Kreder. The set remained tightly contested throughout the entirety but ultimately when to Wheaton 25-23. 

The third set saw another close matchup. Millikin went on a 4-0 run to pull ahead 11-6 with Stuart behind the service line. Millikin maintained a lead until Wheaton used a Big Blue service error to go on a 6-0 run and take a 24-23 lead. Millikin ran off three straight points, ending with blocks by Kreder/Brummel and Kreder/Stuart to take a 26-24 win. 

In the fourth set, the Thunder remained neck-and-neck with Millikin. The Big Blue broke an 11-11 tie with a 3-0 run highlighted by an Itzenhuiser service ace. A 7-0 run with Howell behind the service line, including two service aces, gave Millikin a 25-17 win to force the fifth set. A dagger off the hand of Kreder ended the set. 

Wheaton regained their early momentum in the fifth set. A 3-0 run early in the set by the Thunder with Major behind the service line gave Wheaton a 4-2 lead. Millikin fought back after falling down four, with kills by Flesner and Kreder and an attack error by the Thunder brought the score to 11-10. Wheaton was able to side out and secure four of the final five points scored to grab a 15-11 fifth set victory. 

Millikin women's volleyball will look to bounce back from the setback in another College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin matchup at Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill. on Friday, October 8.
