Women's Volleyball Blanks DePauw in 3-0 Sweep

The Big Blue women's volleyball team traveled to Greencastle, Ind. for a non-conference matchup against the Tigers of DePauw University on Sunday, October 10. Millikin was victorious, defeating the Tigers 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-18).

Tori Stuart led the Big Blue at the net with 11 kills. Kamryn Flesner and Jessi Kreder each added six. Anna Deutschmann recorded four service aces and eight digs, while Julianna Vassallo led MU in digs with 11 and tallied three service aces. Olivia Grbavac notched 17 assists, and Sophia Gibbs led the Big Blue in blocks with three total. 

DePauw was led by Sarah Herman and Katie Gansle with six kills apiece.

After DePauw took an early lead, the Big Blue evened the score then took a 6-5 lead on back-to-back service aces off the hand of Deutschmann. Back-to-back service aces from Vassallo later in the set during a 4-0 Big Blue run gave MU a 12-7 advantage. Later in the set, it was Vassallo behind the service line again when Millikin used a 3-0 run to run the score to 24-19, and a kill by Stuart secured the 25-20 first set win for Millikin.

The Big Blue started off set two on a 5-0 run with Grbavac behind the service line, highlighted by a block on the Tiger attack by Gibbs and Lauren Brummel. After a Tigers side-out, the Big Blue tallied three straight points to take an 8-1 lead. Millikin finished off their second set victory on a 4-0 run, and a kill by Flesner ended set two at 25-17. 

Millikin completed the three set sweep with a win in set three. Reece Brown entered the game for Millikin and rattled off a service ace as part of a 4-0 Big Blue run to pull ahead 11-5. DePauw rallied, using a 3-0 run of their own to pull the game to 18-14. Millikin answered with a matching 3-0 run to stretch the score to 21-14 before the Tigers once again matched to bring their deficit to four. A kill by Stuart followed by a block by Gibbs and Kaitlyn Skowronski put the Big Blue two points away from the sweep, and back-to-back kills from Stuart and Gibbs ended the match with a 25-18 final set victory for Millikin.

The Big Blue women's volleyball team improved to 13-6 overall on the season with the win. MU will jump back into conference play on Wednesday, October 13 when they travel to Elmhurst, Ill. to match up against the Bluejays of Elmhurst University.
