Big Blue Women's Volleyball Captures Two Sets from Bluejays, Falls in Narrow Defeat

The Big Blue women's volleyball team traveled to Elmhurst, Ill. for a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin matchup against the Bluejays of Elmhurst University. In a back-and-forth match, Elmhurst captured the five set victory.

Millikin's Tori Stuart led the Big Blue attack with 17 kills. Lauren Brummel chipped in 10 and Kamryn Flesner added eight. Olivia Grbavac tallied 45 set assists in the five-set match. On the defensive side, Julianna Vassallo notched 16 digs while Stuart and Grbavac added 14 apiece. Jessi Kreder accounted for six total blocks against the Bluejays. 

For Elmhurst, Taylor Zurliene was the kills leader with 18, and both Elise Rossing and Jada Wiley chipped in 10. Their offensive attack helped lead the Bluejays to taking the first set win. Elmhurst jumped out to a 7-4 lead before a service ace off the hand of Emily Duis pushed the Bluejay lead to five. Millikin used back-to-back mistakes by Elmhurst to bring the score within one at 11-10 Elmhurst. A kill from Brummel gave MU a 13-12 lead. Elmhurst used a 4-0 run to take a 20-15 lead, and brought the score to 24-19 on a kill by Elise Rossing. Millikin used a late game rally to bring the score within two, highlighted by a block by Flesner and Kreder, but Elmhurst took the 25-22 win in set one. 

Millikin bounced back in set two, using an early 6-1 run with Sophia Howell behind the service line to pull ahead 7-2. Elmhurst rallied, and a block by Katelyn Bower brought the Bluejays within one. The Big Blue stretched the lead to two once again with a kill by Flesner, but an Elmhurst kill and block evened the score at 13. A service ace off the hand of Kailee Itzenhuiser as part of a 4-0 run gave Millikin an 18-14 lead. Millikin ended the set on a 4-0 run with a kill off the hand of Flesner sealing the 25-20 win. 

Set three saw 10 tied scores before Millikin used a 4-0 run with Howell behind the line to pull ahead 16-12. Elmhurst came back with a 3-0 run of their own, but Millikin took the 20-16 lead after a 3-0 run capped off by a service ace by Itzenhuiser. Millikin polished off their second set victory of the night 25-21. 

Elmhurst came back strong in the fourth set and created a 23-13 lead quickly. The Big Blue used consecutive kills from Kreder, Grbavac, and Flesner to pull within six. but Elmhurst came away with a 25-17 win to even the match at two all. 

The fifth set was all Elmhurst. The Bluejays pulled ahead 6-1 early, then pushed their lead to seven with back-to-back blocks. Back-to-back service aces brought the contest to match point at 14-4, and a kill by Elise Rossing gave Elmhurst the 15-5 set win and 3-2 match victory. 

Millikin will take a short hiatus from conference play to play in their home tournament on Friday, October 15 and Saturday, October 16 at the Griswold Center.
