Women's Volleyball Sweeps Duhawks in Five State Classic Opener

The Big Blue women's volleyball team matched up against the Duhawks of Loras College on Friday, October 15 in the opening matchup of Millikin's Five State Classic hosted at the Griswold Center. Millikin secured a 3-0 sweep to improve to 14-7 on the season. The Big Blue outkilled Loras 50-29 in the match. 

Tori Stuart once again led the Big Blue at the net with 14 kills. Jessi Kreder added 11 and Kamryn Flesner tallied nine. Julianna Vassallo and Kailee Itzenhuiser each cleaned up 12 Duhawk attacks to lead MU in digs, and Sophia Howell added ten. Jessi Kreder led the team in blocks with six total, and Reece Brown notched 41 assists. 

The Big Blue broke a set one 11-11 tie with back-to-back kills off the hand of Stuart. They went on a 3-0 run to pull ahead 15-12 on a service ace by Stuart. A block by Kreder and Brummel pushed the Millikin lead to four, and a kill by Brummel built on it. Millikin used a final 3-0 run to end the set on a service ace by Brown, taking the 25-18 first set victory.

Loras started the second set out 3-1 after a block by Sara Hoskins and Olivia Smith. The Big Blue came back and tied the score at three after a Duhawk attacking error. The set remained evenly matched, and the Big Blue tied the score up again at six all on a block by Kreder and Stuart. The Duhawks once again fought back, but the Big Blue matched their scoring on a kills by Kreder and Sophia Gibbs to tie things up at eight. A 5-0 run with Stuart behind the service line gave the Big Blue a 15-12 advantage. The Duhawks stormed back, and the score tied again at 18-18 and 19-19. Millikin pulled ahead on a kill by Stuart 23-22, but the Duhawks once again were able to match. A kill by Stuart put the Big Blue up one again, and Loras answered with a kill off the hand of Lyndsi Wilgenbusch to push the score to 24-24. Kills by Flesner and Kreder finished off the second set 26-24, and the Big Blue pulled ahead 2-0 in the match. 

In the final set of the night, the Big Blue started off strong with a 3-0 lead. Millikin pushed the lead to 11-4, using a 3-0 run with Anna Deutschmann behind the service line, highlighted by a solo block by Kreder. The Big Blue furthered the lead with Itzenhuiser serving, tallying a kill by Flesner, three from Stuart, and one from Deutschmann during the 5-0 run that put them up 16-5. The Duhawks attempted the comeback with a few short runs of their own, but the Big Blue proved victorious, closing out the match with a 25-17 set win on a solo block by Kreder.

The Big Blue will begin day two of the Five State Classic with a matchup against Trine University who swept Simpson College on day one of the tournament at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 16.
