Women's Tennis Defeats Illinois Wesleyan, Will Meet Wheaton in CCIW Tournament Semifinals

The Big Blue women's tennis team opened the CCIW Fall Women's Tennis Championships on Thursday, October 21 with a 5-0 victory over the Titans of Illinois Wesleyan University. The tournament, played at the Centre Court Athletic Club in Hanover Park, Ill. and hosted by Elmhurst University, will conclude with the championship and third place matches on Saturday, October 23.

Millikin started off strong with a No. 1 doubles victory by Emily Markus and Paige Willer, defeating Ashley Mohr and Anna Cooper 8-1. The Big Blue picked up a second win as doubles finished in order with Nikol Obradovic and Chloe Sabin victorious over Katelyn Heller and Amber Shuang 8-3. In the final doubles match to finish, the partnership of Shelby Jones and Destiny Galvan matched up against the Titans' Maria Poehls and Marissa Hagler at No. 3. After falling behind 2-5, Galvan and Jones won six straight games to pull off the 8-5 match victory and complete the doubles sweep.

From there, the Big Blue just needed to win two singles matches to eliminate Illinois Wesleyan and move on to the semifinals. Brianna Barconi picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ashley Mohr at No. 3. Markus provided the second singles win in comeback fashion. After Markus defeated Wesleyan's Cooper in the first set 6-1, she fell behind 2-3 in the second set. Markus rallied back to lift Millikin over Wesleyan with a 6-3 second set win.

The 5-0 victory over Illinois Wesleyan sets up the #2 seeded Big Blue women's tennis team for a matchup against the #3 seeded Wheaton College on Friday, October 22 at 12:30 PM. Wheaton defeated #6 Carroll in the first round of play by a 5-1 margin.

In their first meeting this season, Millikin defeated the Thunder 5-4, with the teams of Willer/Markus and Obradovic/Sabin winning their doubles matches, and Obradovic, Markus, and Sabin providing the singles victories.

On the other side of the bracket, #1 North Central proved victorious with a 5-0 win over #8 North Park, who had previously defeated #9 Elmhurst in the play-in match. They will meet #5 Augustana, who needed all nine matchups to take down #4 Carthage in a 5-4 match.
