Big Blue Women's Volleyball Bests Augustana

The Big Blue women's volleyball team matched up against the Augustana Vikings on Friday, October 8 in Rock Island, Ill. Millikin was the victor, claiming a 3-1 win (20-25, 25-15, 25-12, 25-15). 

Tori Stuart led the Big Blue at the net with 17 and behind the service line with two service aces. Lauren Brummel and Jessi Kreder each added eight kills. On the defensive side, Kreder tallied five blocks, and both Brummel and Sophia Gibbs added four. Anna Deutschmann served up two aces, and Julianna Vassallo added one ace and 27 digs. Olivia Grbavac tallied the top number of assists with 33. Kailee Itzenhuiser notched 19 digs, and Stuart added 13. 

Augustana started off the match hot with a 6-0 run to begin the set, highlighted by a service ace off the hand of Olivia Doak. The Big Blue chipped away at the lead with a 3-0 run of their own, narrowing the lead to four at 13-9. After the Vikings stretched the lead to seven, Millikin used a 4-0 run with Grbavac behind the service line to cut the Augie lead to four, but Augustana came away with the 25-20 win in the first set. 

Millikin bounced back in the second set starting off with a 6-0 run of their own with Stuart serving to pull ahead 6-1 early. The run was highlighted by a block by Gibbs and Brummel on a Viking attack. The Big Blue stretched the lead to 13-5 on a block by Gibbs and Stuart. Augie cut the MU lead to five with back-to-back kills from Lexis Miller at 15-10. The Big Blue used a block by Grbavac and Kreder to push the lead to 20-12 and came away with the 25-15 on a kill by Stuart. 

The beginning of set three was tightly contested. Millikin was able to pull ahead 8-6 on a kill by Gibbs. The Vikings sided out and pulled ahead 9-8 before the Big Blue used a 3-0 run to take the 11-9 advantage. A longer run with Stuart behind the service line brought the Millikin lead to 17-10, ending on a service ace by Stuart. The Big Blue finished out the set with Deutschmann running off five straight points behind the service line, including back-to-back service aces to secure points 23 and 24. Millikin took the 25-12 victory in set three to take a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth set.

Augustana once again took an early lead in a tightly contested beginning of the set. Millikin pulled ahead 7-4 after back-to-back attacking errors by Vikings. The Big Blue stretched their lead to 16-7, then 19-13 on a kill by Tori Stuart. MU finished off their 25-15 match point victory with a kill by Kamryn Flesner. 

With the win, Millikin moved to 12-6 overall, 3-2 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin. The Big Blue will pause their conference schedule on Sunday, October 10 for a non-conference matchup against DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana for a 2:00 PM Eastern Time matchup.
