Millikin Baseball Wins Opening Series

The Millikin baseball team posted on 9-3 win over Marian University February 28 to win both games of the season opening series at Workman Family Baseball Field in Decatur, Illinois.
The game was scoreless until the fifth inning when Marian's Michael Snow hit a solo homerun to put the Sabres up 1-0. The Big Blue answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth taking advantage of a walk, balk and two Marian errors. Kyle Kane had a run scoring bunt base hit on the safety squeeze with an errant throw allowing both of Millikin's runners to score.
The Big Blue scored four runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth. Brent Beals had a sacrifice fly that allowed two runs to score after the left fielder dropped the ball while attempting to make the catch. Beals would add a run scoring double in the eighth inning.
Beals and Garrett Fritz each had two hits and two RBI for Millikin. Kyle Kane went 1-3 with two RBI.
Tanner Coleman was the winning pitcher for Millikin throwing five innings allowing four hits and one earned run with striking out three. Beals picked up the save throwing one and one-third innings allowing only one hit and striking out three.
Snow and Jake Arens had two hits for Marian.
Millikin is now 2-0 and will host Hope College in a doubleheader on March 6.
