Softball Splits Conference Doubleheader with North Park

The Millikin softball team had their first College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin doubleheader of the season on Saturday, March 13 at the Workman Family Softball Field against North Park University. The Big Blue split with the Vikings, taking game one 4-3 before losing in game two 2-7.

In game one, Addison Sargent started in the circle for the Big Blue, pitching 2.2 innings before Aly Armstrong came in and earned her second victory of the 2021 season.

Millikin found themselves in the scoring column first in the bottom of the second. After Aubrey Hunt singled to left field, Jada Wilson came in to pinch run and stole second. A single by Leah Foreman advanced Wilson to third, and Foreman stole second to force the Vikings to make a play. With the throw to second, Wilson stole home to earn the first Big Blue run.

North Park struck shortly after, scoring two runs in the top of the third. A double down the right field line by Erin Penn scored two for the Vikings, and Penn scored on a Jessie Fix single to right center.

The Big Blue rallied back in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game at three. Skielyr Trenkle started the inning off with a walk, stealing second during Lexus Tennison's at-bat. A double by Tennison scored Trenkle, and Tennison later scored on a Hunt single to right center.

With each team held scoreless throughout the next four innings, the game went to extras. After picking up a quick two outs in the top of the eighth, the Vikings leadoff hitter, Ellie Manderfield bunted and a throwing error by Armstrong that skipped down the right field line allowed Manderfield to advance to third. In her attempt to score, the relay from Kailey Pulec in right field to Kaylee Goluch to Foreman at the plate was in time to get the third out and end the inning.

In the bottom of the eighth, back to back groundouts to shortstop put two outs on the scoreboard for the Big Blue. Goluch singled to right field, and Rylee Blake came in to pinch run. Leah Foreman hit a fly ball to shallow left field, and it was dropped, allowing Blake to score the winning run for Millikin.

Hunt and Goluch both went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Big Blue in game one.

Game two saw a short appearance by freshman pitcher Audrey Eades, who picked up the loss. The Big Blue were the visiting team on the scoreboard in game two. In the bottom of the first, the Vikings scored four runs on three hits and an error. Sargent appeared again in the circle in game two, coming in during the first inning. Bailey Coffman also saw her first action of the season on the mound, pitching one inning in relief.

Millikin scored their two runs in the fifth. A double down the left field line off the bat of Maddie Holland moved Foreman to third after she reached on a walk, later scoring on a groundout by Pulec. A groundout by Knoerzer scored Holland.

Rachael Feazelle picked up the win for the Vikings to improve to 2-0 on the season. No Big Blue batter struck out against Feazelle throughout the seven innings of play.

The Big Blue will take on a non-conference opponent in the DePauw University Tigers on Tuesday, March 16 at the Workman Family Baseball Field.
