Big Blue Women's Volleyball Outlasted by Carthage in Five

The fourth ranked Big Blue women's volleyball team matched up against the seventh ranked Carthage College Firebirds in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin game on Sunday, March 14. In Millikin's first five set match of the season, they were outlasted by the Firebirds.

Carthage struck first, coming back from a 15-9  deficit to defeat the Big Blue 22-25. A 9-0 run to finish the first set with Nicole Acton behind the line closed out the victory for the Firebirds. Set two was dominated by MU, jumping out to a 10-2 lead and they never looked back for a 25-13 set victory. Having gained momentum from the second set win, the Big Blue went on to take the third set 25-20.

Set four saw Millikin jump out to an early 4-1 lead. After tying the score twice, Carthage took the lead 7-6 and extended the match with a 22-25 victory.

In a tightly contested fifth set, the score was tied nine times and saw three lead changes. A kill by Kamryn Flesner helped the Big Blue pull ahead 13-12, but the Firebirds quickly tied the set back up with a kill from Autumn McGee. After an attack by Andrea Kozak was blocked by Jessi Kreder and Tori Stuart, the Big Blue were up 15-14. A service error by the Big Blue allowed Carthage to tie the game at 15, and a Stuart attack that was blocked by Kozak and Kasey Pfister followed by a kill by Kozak gave the Firebirds the CCIW victory against Millikin.

Millikin was led at the net by Stuart, who tallied 14 kills. Kreder added 12 kills along with four blocks and Flesner added 11 kills. Sarah Bingenheimer added 51 assists to her career total, and she notched four service aces. Alyssa Vignos led the Big Blue in digs with 22, and Bingenheimer added 21.

Millikin women's volleyball will face Elmhurst University on Friday, March 19 at the Griswold Center.
