Millikin Women's Volleyball Picks up Road Win at Augustana

The Big Blue women's volleyball team traveled to Rock Island, Ill. on Sunday, March 21 to match up against the Augustana Vikings for the second time this season. Millikin picked up their fourth College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin win, defeating the Vikings 3-1.

Leading the way for MU was senior Madison Clarida who tallied 14 kills, two aces, and five blocks. Tori Stuart added 14 kills, and Gabrielle Coulthard notched nine kills and 12 digs. The Big Blue assists leader was Sarah Bingenheimer with 41 with 18 digs, and Alyssa Vignos tallied 19 digs. 

Brook Fieldman led the Vikings with 18 kills, and Lexi Miller tallied 12 for the Vikings. 

In the first set, the Big Blue jumped out to a 3-0 lead with back to back kills from Chelsea Getz and Stuart. A short run by Augustana put the Vikings ahead 4-5. In a game that saw the score tied seven times early on, a 7-0 run by the Big Blue with Tori Stuart behind the service line put Millikin up 22-14. During the run, Clarida and Coulthard combined for a block on an attack by Miller. The Vikings went on a 6-0 run themselves, closing the gap to make the Big Blue's lead 23-22. A kill by Coulthard and an attack error by Laura Heuermann for the Vikings closed out set one and gave MU a 25-22 victory.

In set two, the Vikings jumped out to a 1-3 lead over the Big Blue. A few short runs by Augustana gave them an 11-17 lead. A service ace by Stephanie Holsinger highlighted a 5-0 run by Millikin to bring the Big Blue within one. Augustana held onto their early lead and took the 23-25 second set victory over MU.

Clarida served first in set three after siding out with a kill, assisted by Bingenheimer. She tallied two service aces during a 5-0 run to give the Big Blue an early lead. The Vikings kept the game close, though, and forced Millikin to take a timeout after nearly evening the score at 16-15. A service ace from Coulthard put the Big Blue at game point, and a service error by the Vikings completed the 25-20 third set victory for MU. 

The Big Blue started off set four with a 3-0 run, with Stuart earning a service ace. The game was quickly tied by the Vikings who went on a run of their own. With Stuart behind the line once again to serve, the Big Blue went on a 5-0 run to bring the score to 12-7. The Big Blue built their lead to nine with two kills by Stuart, and MU pulled ahead 20-11. The Vikings made a short run of their own to pull within four, but the Big Blue held on to secure a 25-19 win and defeat the Vikings 3-1 to pick up their fourth win.

Millikin women's volleyball improved to 4-1 on the season, and they will be the visitors again in their next game action when they travel to North Park University in Chicago, Ill. on Friday, March 26 to take on the Vikings.
