Millikin Women's Tennis Beats Carthage for First Time in Program History

Box Score The Big Blue women's tennis team began conference play on Friday, March 19 taking on the Firebirds of Carthage College. The match in Racine, Wis. was the first of two on a conference road trip to Wisconsin. Millikin defeated the Firebirds 6-3 to earn their first win over Carthage in women's tennis program history. Previously, Carthage boasted a 31-0 record against the Big Blue.

Starting off strong in doubles play, the first match to finish proved victorious for Millikin as Nikol Obradovic and Katie Cooper defeated Stephanie Yerges and Kenna Beth of the Firebirds 8-3. The only doubles loss for Millikin finished up next with Brianna Barconi and Cristina Borunda losing to Sam Ramsey and Rachel Anderson 5-8. Taking the second victory of the evening for the Big Blue was the doubles team of Shelby Jones and Destiny Galvan, who defeated Sierra Sonnemaker and Faelan O'Shaughnessy 8-6.

In singles play, Barconi was the first victor at #2 with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Anderson. Taylor Milholland picked up the next win for Millikin at #5 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Yerges. Also winning their singles match was Borunda at #4, taking down O'Shaughnessy 6-3, 6-4. Rounding out the singles wins for the Big Blue was Galvan at #6 with a victory over Cailida Werner 6-2, 6-2. The last two singles matches to finish both resulted in wins for the Firebirds. Jones was beaten at #3 by Sonnemaker 4-6, 3-6, and Obradovic took the loss at #1 to Ramsey 5-7, 4-6.

Not only did the Big Blue notch their first women's tennis win over Carthage College in program history, they also secured their first College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin victory for the 2021 season. Millikin women's tennis improved to 4-2 on the season and are 1-0 in conference play.

In the second stop of the Wisconsin road trip, the Big Blue will take on Carroll University at 12:00 PM on Saturday, March 20.
