Millikin Softball Sweeps Augustana College

Millikin softball played their first away games of the 2021 season on Sunday, March 28 in Rock Island, Ill. against the Augustana Vikings. The Big Blue swept the Vikings to pick up two more College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin victories.

In game one, Millikin put up a run in the top of the first inning starting with a leadoff bunt single from Rylee Blake. After Blake stole second, Kaylee Goluch recorded an RBI on a single to left field.

After four scoreless innings for both teams, the Big Blue struck again in the top of the sixth inning. A leadoff walk issued to Aubrey Hunt put pinch runner Emma Lewandowski on first, and a sacrifice bunt from Gretchen Gould moved her to third. A single off the bat of Maddie Holland scored Lewandowski. Back to back singles by Kailey Pulec and Skielyr Trenkle advanced Holland around the bases and put a third run on the board for MU.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Big Blue offense went to work again and put up three more runs to seal a 6-0 game one victory. A Leah Foreman single put a baserunner on for Millikin, and Hunt earned an RBI with a single. With Grace Biondo in to pinch run for Hunt, Gould hit a home run to left field to plate the final two runs for MU.

With the 6-0 victory, Aly Armstrong picked up her fifth win of the season. Armstrong tallied six strikeouts in the outing while only allowing three hits. For the Vikings, Cecelia Peine took the loss.

Both Goluch and Gould went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Big Blue in game one, and Holland went 3-for-3.

In game two, Millikin was the home team on the scoreboard. Augustana struck first in the top of the second inning with a Kaitlin Rusin home run to left field.

The top of the fourth inning saw Augustana score two more runs to put the Big Blue at a 0-3 disadvantage. Nadia Ranieri doubled to left center to score Molly Wrenn, who reached on a walk. Ranieri later scored on an Sydney Ohrtmann single to left center.

The Vikings tacked on another run in the fifth after a Rusin single scored pinch runner Olivia Blood.

Held scoreless through the first four innings of play, the Big Blue tied the game in the fifth inning at four. Holland started things off with a double to center and later scored when Trenkle reached on an error. Trenkle scored on a single by Goluch. With Foreman at the plate, Goluch stole second, and Foreman drove her in with a double to left center. Foreman later scored the fourth run of the inning when Gould reached on an error.

The Big Blue threatened to score the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth when Lexus Tennison walked in a pinch hit at-bat, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Holland, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. The sixth ended with the score still knotted at four.

In the top of the seventh, an Ashlyn Mathers double to left center with one out put a runner in scoring position for the Vikings. After a pop up to Blake at second recorded the second out of the inning, Bailey Coffman struck out Jannae Mehaffey to end the inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Big Blue picked up a win in walk-off fashion for the second day in a row. Foreman singled and advanced to second on a single to left center by Hunt. Gould drove in the winning run to secure a 5-4 win and the doubleheader sweep for Millikin.

Foreman went 4-for-4 at the plate in the second game for Millikin, tallying four of seven hits for the Big Blue.

Coffman was the winning pitcher in game two with Ashley Dehmlow taking the loss for Augustana.

With the sweep, the Big Blue improved to 9-5 on the season, 6-2 in CCIW play. Millikin will return home for another conference doubleheader on Wednesday, March 31 when they match up against the Titans of Illinois Wesleyan University at the Workman Family Softball Field.
