Softball Splits Twin Bill with Illinois Wesleyan

The Big Blue softball team continued played their first of three doubleheaders for the week on Wednesday, March 31 at the Workman Family Softball Field against Illinois Wesleyan. Millikin split with the Titans in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin games.

The Titans got on the board first in game one. A walk to lead off the second inning drawn by Colleen Palczynski later plated a run when Lexy Trammell tripled down the left field line.

Millikin evened the score quickly in the bottom of the second. A walk issued to Gretchen Gould started the inning, and a Holland single followed by an RBI groundout by Kailey Pulec scored Gould.

Wesleyan took the lead once again in the top of the third with back to back singles by Madison Moore and Megan Fontanetta. A bases-clearing double to left center off the bat of Hayley Earl put the Titan lead to 1-3.

The Big Blue chipped away at the deficit in the bottom of the inning when Kaylee Goluch singled to right and scored on a single down the left field line by Aubrey Hunt.

After holding the Titans scoreless in the fourth, MU took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Pulec started things off with a single through the right side of the infield. A single through the left side by Skielyr Trenkle put two baserunners on for the Big Blue. With two outs, Goluch tripled to deep right field, bringing home both Pulec and Trenkle. A pinch hit double down the left field line off the bat of Cassie Reed scored Goluch and gave the Big Blue a 5-3 lead. Millikin added another run in the fifth when a Trenkle single up the middle scored Holland.

Wesleyan rallied back late in the game, scoring a run in the sixth when two walks and a single loaded the bases. Moore reached on a fielder's choice and picked up the RBI when Hannah Heraty crossed the plate. The Big Blue answered with a double to right center by Reed to start the sixth. Cassidy Knoerzer singled up the middle to score Reed.

The Titans threatened to extend game one in the seventh. Earl tripled to right center to lead off the inning. Palczynski reached base on an error, and a walk issued to Trammell loaded the bases for Wesleyan. A single by Toni Tortorella scored Earl, and a walk issued to Kristina Sherwin brought the Titans within a run. Aly Armstrong struck out Moore to end game one and secure the 7-6 victory for the Big Blue.

Armstrong threw all seven innings, striking out 10 Titans and picking up her sixth win of the season. Madie Monk took the loss for Illinois Wesleyan.

At the plate, Goluch and Trenkle each went 2-for-3 for the Big Blue, and Cassie Reed was 2-for-2.

In game two, Bailey Coffman was in the circle for the Big Blue. She held the Titans to just six hits in her six innings of work.

As the home team on the scoreboard in the second game of the doubleheader, Illinois Wesleyan scored first in the bottom of the first. Moore reached base on a walk, and she advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Fontanetta. Palczynski singled to right field to score Moore.

Held scoreless until the fourth, the Big Blue manufactured a run in an inning that started with a Gould walk. Emma Lewandowski pinch ran, and added a stolen base to her stat line. Knoerzer laid down a bunt to advance Lewandowski to third, and she later scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at one apiece.

Wesleyan took the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Fontanetta singled to left field and moved Moore to second after she reached on a fielder's choice. Another fielder's choice, this time with Fontanetta out at second base, followed by two walks advanced Moore across the plate to give Wesleyan a one run lead.

Millikin fell to the Titans in game two, 1-2. With the split, the Big Blue are now 10-6 overall, with a 7-3 CCIW record. Softball will compete in their second doubleheader of the week on Friday, April 2 when the Vikings of Augustana College travel to Decatur.
