Softball Routs Augustana in Doubleheader Sweep

The Big Blue softball team matched up with the Augustana Vikings for the second time in six days for a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin doubleheader at the Workman Family Softball Field on Friday, April 2. Millikin earned two more conference victories with the doubleheader sweep.

In game one, an offensive explosion in the first inning put the Big Blue up 9-0. After Aly Armstrong sat down the first three Viking batters of the game with strikeouts, the offense went to work. Rylee Blake started things off for Millikin with a walk. A Kaylee Goluch single through the right side advanced Blake to third, and Leah Foreman loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch. Aubrey Hunt earned an RBI as the second batter in a row to be hit by a pitch. Gretchen Gould plated two more runs with a single through the right side of the infield. Knoerzer reached on a hard hit line drive that skipped off the glove of the first baseman Ashlyn Mathers. With the bases loaded, the Vikings opted to make a pitching change and send Nadia Ranieri to the mound. Holland kept the offensive momentum going with a single to center field, bringing Hunt across the plate. Kailey Pulec reached on a fielder's choice that tallied her an RBI but sent Knoerzer back to the dugout with a force at third. Skielyr Trenkle then tripled to left center and notched two RBIs to put the Big Blue lead at 7-0. The final two runs of the inning were scored on a bunt single by Blake. Trenkle scored from third, and Blake made her way around the bases on a throwing error by Ranieri.

Millikin added another run to the board in the bottom of the second inning with a new Viking pitcher in the circle. Amanda Page started her first inning of work with back to back singles off the bats of Holland and Pulec. Holland stole third base and was later able to advance home when Pulec was caught attempting to steal second for the first out of the inning.

The Big Blue tacked on four more hits and three more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Goluch singled to second base, then later scored on a Foreman double to deep left center. Jada Wilson stepped to the plate in place of Hunt and singled to left field. Camryn Skundberg also pinch hit in the inning and recorded an RBI when she reached on an error and Foreman crossed the plate. Knoerzer reached base on a fielder's choice and was brought home by a Holland triple to right center.

In their last at-bat of the first game, Millikin scored five runs to seal the 18-0 game one, five inning victory. After picking up two quick outs, Hannah Watts' pinch hit at-bat resulted in a double to left center. Olivia Cooper reached on an error but tallied an RBI as Watts scored the fourteenth run of the game. Cooper later scored on a Wilson single to left field. The Big Blue continued to produce runs on singles, first off the bat of Skundberg that scored Wilson, then with Knoerzer singling through the right side to score Skundberg. Lindsey Bangert drew a walk to put a second runner on base for the Big Blue, and Dani Neuleib sent a ball to left field that bounced over the fence for a run-scoring, ground rule double.

Millikin tallied 16 hits in the game, and Aly Armstrong held the Vikings hitless while striking out six to pick up her seventh win of the season. Charly Warlow appeared in the top of the fifth, recording one strikeout in her first appearance for the Big Blue. Cecelia Peine suffered her fourth loss of the year for Augustana.

In game two, the Big Blue were the visitors on the scoreboard. MU put up a run right away in the top of the first inning when Blake laid down a bunt single down the third base line. She later stole second then advanced to third on a deep fly ball from Goluch. Foreman reached on a fielder's choice, with Blake out in a rundown between third and home. With Foreman advancing to second during the rundown, the Big Blue had a runner in scoring position for Gould. Reaching on a throwing error, she picked up the RBI as Foreman scored the first run of game two.

Millikin tacked on another run in the top of the second starting with an infield single by Pulec. Pulec stole second base, then advanced to third on a groundout by Trenkle. A Blake double down the left field line scored Pulec to give the Big Blue a 2-0 lead.

The Big Blue extended their game two lead in the fourth inning when Knoerzer reached on an error, then advanced to second base on a passed ball. Another infield single by Pulec advanced Knoerzer to third, who later scored on a sacrifice bunt by Trenkle.

After being held scoreless for the first five innings, the Augustana offense chipped away at the Big Blue lead in the bottom of the sixth, with Bailey Coffman on the mound, Ohrtmann and Dehmlow reached on back to back errors by Knoerzer. Tallying only their second hit of the day, Mathers dobuled down the right field line and picked up two RBIs, but she was thrown out trying for the triple.

Up one, the Big Blue extended their lead in the top of the seventh. Blake walked to start things off, then picked up a stolen base. Goluch laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Blake to third, then Foreman picked up the RBI on a fielder's choice bunt that scored Blake. Emma Lewandowski checked into the game to pinch run for Foreman and stole the second Big Blue base of the inning. Hunt reached on a fielder's choice to put a second baserunner on for the Big Blue, then Wilson entered the game to pinch run. Gould sent a ball into the left center gap to score both Lewandowski and Wilson, extending the MU lead to 6-2. Gould scored on a Knoerzer double down the right field line, and the third double in a row for the Big Blue off the bat of Holland scored Knoerzer. Pulec grounded out, but when Holland nabbed an extra base on the throw, a throwing error by the Vikings allowed her to score the ninth and final run for Millikin.

Addison Sargent earned the win for the Big Blue, and Bailey Coffman's two innings of work were enough for her first save of the season. Both Sargent and Coffman only allowed one hit apiece to the Vikings in the 9-2 Millikin win. Erin Smith took the loss for the Vikings in game two.

With the sweep, softball improved to 12-6 on the season with a 9-3 CCIW record. They are scheduled to finish off their busy week with a home doubleheader against conference foe, Carthage College on Saturday, April 3 at the Workman Family Softball Field.
