Softball Starts Season with Sweep of Illinois College

The Big Blue Softball team began their 2021 season at the Workman Family Softball Field with a non-conference doubleheader against the Lady Blues of Illinois College. Millikin took game one, 4-2 and they completed the sweep in six innings with a 10-2 game two win.

In game one, sophomore Addison Sargent was on the mound for the Big Blue. Sargent tallied three strikeouts in her seven innings of work and earned her first win of 2021. Illinois College's offense heated up quickly, starting off with a double by third baseman Jessica Belzer. Belzer scored on a sacrifice fly, giving the Lady Blues their first run in the top of the first. Belzer went on to score the second run for IC on a double by Madisyn Webster in the third inning.

Down 0-2, the Big Blue offense came to life in the bottom of the fifth. The inning began with a single by Kaylee Goluch, who was later thrown out at the plate on a fielder's choice from Kailey Pulec. Leah Foreman also reached for MU on a single and advanced to second on a passed ball. A pinch hit double to right center from Aubrey Hunt scored two, and Rylee Blake scored the third run in the fifth after stealing third and advancing home on a throwing error by the catcher. Millikin scored their fourth and final run in the sixth after Lexus Tennison singled to left field, advanced on a groundout, then scored on a throwing error by the shortstop on a ball put into play by Goluch.

In game two, once again the Lady Blues struck quickly on offense, working against veteran pitcher Aly Armstrong and scoring their lone two runs in the top of the first. The leadoff batter, Belzer, reached after being hit by a pitch, and the Big Blue thwarted an attempt for a sacrifice bunt from Webster when Gretchen Gould put out Belzer at second. A two RBI single for Emma Nicholson scored Webster and Maddy Morgan for Illinois College.

MU scored their first run in the bottom of the second, starting with a double to right center by Foreman. A single by Pulec advanced Foreman to third, and another Millikin single off the bat of Skielyr Trenkle scored Foreman. An offensive explosion by the Big Blue helped them to score seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. A leadoff walk and stolen base for Maddie Holland started the inning, and a single to left field by Blake moved Holland to third. After a pitching change for the Lady Blues, Trenkle hit it on the ground to shortstop for a fielder's choice, with Blake out at second, but scoring Holland. An RBI single by Tennison scored Trenkle, followed by two straight walks from Gould and Hunt to load the bases. Goluch then singled up the middle to score Tennison, and Foreman was hit by a pitch to score Gould and once again load the bases. After the second pitching change of the inning for Illinois College, Maddie Holland sent a fly ball to left field for a bases clearing triple.

Tennison walked in the bottom of the fifth, advancing around the bases on a Gould single, a passed ball, and a wild pitch to score the ninth run for Millikin. Rounding out the scoring for the Big Blue and ending the game in the bottom of the sixth was Grace Biondo who pinch ran for Foreman after she singled to left field.

Armstrong picked up the win in game two, and freshman Audrey Eades made her debut for Millikin. In five innings of work, Armstrong struck out seven. Eades added one strikeout in her one inning pitched.

In game two, Goluch went 2-4 for MU with a double, and Foreman went 2-3 with a double.

Millikin softball will take on their first conference opponent in a home doubleheader on Saturday, March 13 when they face the Vikings of North Park University.
