Women's Volleyball Places Second in AVCA National Invitational Tournament

After earning a place in the championship bracket in the AVCA National Invitational Tournament by going undefeated on day one, the Big Blue women's volleyball team advanced to the championship game with a 3-2 victory over Transylvania University in the semifinal. 

Millikin took the first set over the Pioneers starting the game on a 1-4 run. Transylvania fought back, with kills by Karrington Jackson and Suzanne Klosterman to tie the game at four apiece. Down 10-11, a kill from Tori Stuart jumpstarted a short run by the Big Blue, giving MU a 14-11 lead. They pulled further ahead with a kill from Kamryn Flesner followed by back to back service aces off the hand of Madison Clarida, taking a 22-14 lead. The Big Blue closed out the set with a kill from Stuart to secure a 25-17 victory. 

The second set saw a similar outcome with Millikin pulling away late in the game after a tight first 20 points. A service ace from Flesner put MU up 20-13. A Stuart kill closed out the second set and a 25-16 win. 

The Pioneers fought back in the third set, starting things off on a 3-0 run with Sylvie Miller behind the service line. The Big Blue took the lead on a block by Stuart, but Transylvania pulled back in front with kills from Madi Davis and Miller. A 5-0 run late in the set helped give the Pioneers a 15-25 win in set three.

Transylvania started off the fourth set with another short run to give them a four point lead over the Big Blue. Millikin tied the set up at seven with a service ace from Stuart, and a block by Jessi Kreder gave Millikin the 10-9 lead. The Pioneers took a 16-12 lead on a 5-0 run capped highlighted with two service aces by Kailey Campbell. A 4-0 run of their own knotted the score at 16, and after tying the score three more times in the set, Transylvania claimed the fourth set with a block and a kill from Grace Ward. 

The fifth set saw Transylvania claim the lead early. Down three, the Big Blue went on a 7-0 run with Flesner behind the line to take a 12-9 lead over the Pioneers. Transylvania rallied back to pull within one, but a 3-0 run and a kill by Stuart capped off the set and match victory. 

Stuart led the way at the net with 16 kills, and Kreder added 11 along with four blocks. Bingenheimer tallied 46 sets across the five sets alongside three service aces, and Alyssa Vignos tallied 15 digs. 

In an all-CCIW Championship matchup, the Big Blue faced Carthage College who defeated Elmhurst University in their semifinal. 

In the first set, Carthage pulled ahead 3-12 early, including an 8-0 run with Haley Horner serving, including three aces in the run. Millikin capped off a short run of their own with a kill by Flesner, pulling within five. A service ace from Bingenheimer extended the game, but Carthage defeated MU 20-25 in the first set. 

Jumping out to a 7-1 lead in set two, Millikin held the lead until a kill from Andrea Kozak tied the game at 12. The Firebirds took their first lead of the game on a service ace by Nicole Acton. The Big Blue jumped back in front an attacking error by Acton. Carthage used back to back service aces by Acton to take a 21-24 lead, then finished off their second set 23-25 victory with a kill by Horner. 

Millikin kept their chances alive with a third set win. Back to back kills from Flesner and Madison Clarida gave the Big Blue a 4-2 lead early on. Kills from Brummel and Flesner, plus a block by Clarida and Brummel extended the MU lead to 17-8. Millikin capped off a 25-14 set victory on an attacking error by Horner. 

In the fourth set, the Big Blue led until Carthage rallied back to tie the set at 16 on a block by Autumn McGee and Kathryn Shuty. Millikin pulled ahead 25-24 with Clarida behind the service line, but back a kill from Horner to tie things up followed by back to back kills from McGee gave Carthage the 25-27 win and the championship. 

Seniors Sarah Bingenheimer and Alyssa Vignos were named to the All-Tournament Team. 

Millikin will conclude their season at a postseason tournament hosted by Illinois Wesleyan, and they will face the Titans in the first round of play.
