Softball Rolls Thunder in Game Two of Doubleheader Split

Big Blue softball rolled to their fifteenth College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin win of the season in six innings at Wheaton College on Friday, April 16. Millikin was defeated in the first game of the doubleheader split.

In game one, the Big Blue put two runs on the board in the top of the second inning. Aubrey Hunt started the inning off with a double down the left field line. Sarah Lahner checked into the game to pinch run, then scored on a Gretchen Gould double to center. The third double in a row, this time off the bat of Lexus Tennison, plated Gould.

Wheaton evened the score in the bottom of the third inning when Ashley Carter drew a walk. She was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Paige Andrews, then scored on an Emilie Gist single up the middle. Gist later scored on a Busch double to center field.

The Thunder took their first lead of the day in the bottom of the fourth. Janette Oh doubled to right center and scored on a sacrifice fly by Andrews. They tacked on another run in the fifth when Claire Busch scored after singling on a groundout by Oh.

The top of the sixth inning saw a Hunt double starting the rally off. Maddie Holland picked up an RBI on a single to left field. Holland crossed the plate when Kailey Pulec doubled to left field, knotting the score at four.

Wheaton pulled back ahead in the bottom of the inning when Carter reached on an error, scoring when Busch sent a double down the right field line. The 4-5 victory for the Thunder was their eighth of the 2021 season.

Bouncing back in game two as the home team on the scoreboard, Millikin completed a 9-1 victory in six innings.

The Big Blue used a big second inning offensive push to take a 5-0 lead. Gould reached on a fielder's choice, then advanced to second on a single by Kaylee Goluch. Holland plated both on a triple to right center, then scored on a Pulec single to center field. Rylee Blake drew a walk to put another baserunner on for MU, and they both scored on Leah Foreman's single to left field.

Millikin tacked on a sixth run in the bottom of the fourth when Goluch scored on a bases loaded walk drawn by Emma Lewandowski

Wheaton chipped away at the Big Blue lead in the top of the sixth inning, starting with a double to left center off the bat of Sydney Heinrich. She scored on a groundout to second by Carter.

The Big Blue finished the game in the sixth. Goluch began the inning with a double to center, scoring on a single by Pulec. Blake reached on a bunt single, and Lewandowski laid down a bunt to reach on a fielder's choice. Blake scored on a failed pickoff attempt by the Thunder, then Lewandowski crossed the plate as Foreman doubled to center to solidify the 9-1 win for Millikin.

Addison Sargent picked up the win for Millikin, her fourth of the season. Sargent struck out five and only allowed five hits in her six innings of work. For the Thunder, Emilie Gist took the win in game one, but was credited with the loss in game two. Aly Armstrong suffered her third loss of the 2021 season for the Big Blue in game one.

The Big Blue will play their second conference doubleheader of the weekend on Saturday, April 17 at North Park University. Millikin softball matched up with North Park in early March and split with the Vikings.
