Softball Downed by North Park

Millikin softball traveled to Chicago, Ill. on Saturday, April 17 to take on the Vikings of North Park University. In the CCIW doubleheader, the Big Blue were swept by the Vikings.

In game one, the Big Blue fell behind early. North Park tacked on a run when Ellie Manderfield crossed the plate on a Rachael Feazelle groundout after she reached on a walk. The Vikings built on their lead in the second inning, starting with back to back walks issued to Erin Penn and Emily Reczek. A walk drawn by Nicole Donnawell loaded the bases, and a Manderfield single scored Penn. Reczek was plated on a Caitlyn Webb groundout, and Donnawell scored as Alyssa Aragon singled to right field. Aragon later scored on a wild pitch to put the Vikings up six.

Millikin chipped away at the deficit in the top of the third, starting the rally with a bunt single down the third baseline by Rylee Blake. She later scored when Aubrey Hunt reached on an error.

The Vikings scored again in the bottom of the fourth. Donnawell singled to right center, then scored when Webb singled to right center.

Millikin picked up another run in the top of the fifth inning when Blake crossed the plate again after reaching on a bunt single down the third baseline. A sacrifice bunt off the bat of Kaylee Goluch moved her to third, and Blake scored on a single to left field off the bat of Leah Foreman.

The Vikings tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. A Webb single followed by an Aragon double down the left field line put two runners in scoring position for North Park, and they both scored on a Malicki single to right center. North Park secured the 2-9 win over the Big Blue in game one.

Aly Armstrong took the loss for Millikin while Rachael Feazelle was credited with the win.

Blake led the Big Blue offensively in game one, going 2-for-3 at the plate, and Foreman added two hits.

In game two, the Big Blue struck first in the scoring column. Blake singled to center, then stole second. Emma Lewandowski stepped to the plate and sent a single down the right field line to score Blake.

North Park pulled ahead in the top of the third inning. Manderfield started off the inning with a bunt single down the third baseline. Webb drew a walk, then an Aragon single to left center scored Manderfield. Their second run of the inning plated Webb as she scored on a single up the middle by Feazelle. Aragon stole home to pick up the third run of game two for the Vikings.

North Park tacked on four more in the top of the fourth. Manderfield walked to lead off the inning, then Webb reached on a fielder's choice. A bunt single by Aragon loaded the bases, and a double off the bat of Feazelle cleared the runners. Feazelle scored the final run of the inning when Penn sent a single up the middle.

The Big Blue loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning, starting with back to back walks drawn by Kailey Pulec and pinch hitter Hannah Watts. Blake singled to center, but MU was unable to bring a runner home to close the gap.

North Park took the 1-7 win in game two. Addison Sargent took the loss in game two, while Alyssa Malicki picked up a win for the Vikings. Blake and Tennison both went 2-for-3 at the plate for Millikin.

The Big Blue fell to 18-9 overall, with a 15-6 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin record. Millikin softball will hit the road again on Saturday, April 24 for a Wisconsin weekend. In Waukesha, Wis. on Saturday, they match up for a doubleheader with Carroll University before trekking to Kenosha, Wis. for a twin bill against Carthage College.
