Millikin Baseball Scores Back-to-Back Walk Off Wins

The Millikin University baseball team improved to 19-4 on the season notching two walk-off wins over Carroll University on April 17 at the Workman Family Baseball Field in Decatur, Illinois. The Big Blue won game one 7-6 in 10 innings and took game two 3-2.

Millikin's game one walk-off hit was from freshman second baseman Tommy Shaw who singled home the game winner with two outs in the 10th inning scoring Mason McGahey who had singled.

The second walk-off was courtesy of sophomore pinch hitter Jacob Havis who drove home Kyle Kane with a sacrifice fly to center field. Kane had opened the ninth inning with a double and moved to third on a Carroll throwing error on a failed pickoff play.

In game one, Millikin opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first with a two-out RBI single from Frank Bryan. After Carroll tied the game in the top of the fifth, Millikin went up 2-1 after Andrew Auton doubled and scored on an RBI fielder's choice from Gabe Soria. The Big Blue scored three times in the sixth on a bases loaded walk by Tanner Coleman and a two-run single from Auton.

Trailing 5-1, Carroll scored two runs in the seventh inning of game one to make it 5-3. McGahey hit an inside the park home run in the eighth to make it 6-3 Millikin. Carroll rallied to tie the game in the top of the ninth with three runs. A run scoring double from Alec Honickel scored the Pioneers first run and a two-run double from Mitch Massino tied the game.

Auton had three hits for Millikin in game one and Bryan added two. Brad Vosters, TJ Pfaffle, Dylan Callahan, Benton Holly and Trevor Benz all had two hits for Carroll in game one.

Jared Buzan was the winning pitcher for Millikin in both games of the doubleheader in relief. In game one, he pitched a scoreless 10th inning allowing only one hit. In game two, he pitched one and two-thirds innings allowing one hit.

Carroll took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning in game two on a two-run home run from Massino. A Carroll error on a Millikin double steal got the Big Blue on the board in the bottom of the inning.

Millikin tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Brent Beals doubled and scored on an RBI groundout from Kyle Kane.

Millikin is now 19-4, 12-3 while Carroll goes to 13-12, 7-10.  Millikin is tied with North Central for first place in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.
