Millikin Softball Picks up Two Wins at Carroll

The Big Blue softball team swept Carroll University in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 24. Millikin fell behind early in game one, but they used a five run third inning to secure a 5-2 win. In game two, two late game runs gave the Big Blue a 5-3 victory.

Carroll struck first in game one. Mathena Higgins singled to start off the first inning, then scored on a single by Kaylee Learman. They tacked on a second run in the bottom of the second, starting with a Claudia Spencer single to center field who later scored on a single up the middle by Higgins.

Millikin took the lead and never looked back in the top of the third inning. Maddie Holland and Kailey Pulec drew back to back walks, then Skielyr Trenkle joined them to load the bases after being hit by a pitch. Rylee Blake was issued the third walk of the inning, scoring Holland. Goluch followed suit, also drawing a walk, and Pulec crossed the plate to tie the game. With the bases still loaded, Aubrey Hunt put the ball in play, reaching on a fielder's choice and plating Trenkle. Gretchen Gould singled through the left side to score Blake, and Lexus Tennison's single to left field scored Goluch, the fifth run of the inning.

Aly Armstrong earned the win for the Big Blue, and Amanda Osterhus was credited with the loss for the Pioneers. Armstrong struck out six in the game and did not issue a walk throughout her seven innings of work.

In game two, Millikin jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Goluch picked up the first hit of game two with a single to left field. Leah Foreman joined her on base with a walk, and both Goluch and Foreman scored when Gould sent a double to right center. Gould later scored after an error committed on a Tennison single to left field.

Carroll rallied in the bottom of the inning to put up two runs of their own. Higgins started off the inning with a walk, and Sierra Grubor laid down a bunt single to put two baserunners on for the Pioneers. Higgins scored when Bridget Rath reached on an error, and Grubor crossed the plate when Lauren Harshbarger drew a bases loaded walk. The Pioneers evened the score in the bottom of the third inning. Allyssa Demma reached base on a single up the middle. Lyndsey Rost checked into the game to pinch run, then Emily Green reached on a fielder's choice. When Green advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt by the Big Blue, Rost touched home to tie the game at three apiece.

Millikin took a one run lead in the fifth. Foreman drew a leadoff walk, then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Camryn Skundberg. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Sarah Lahner took Foreman's place as a pinch runner. Gould sent a double to center to plate Lahner.

The final run for the Big Blue was scored on a solo home run off the bat of Foreman to center field.

Addison Sargent was credited with the win, and Breanna Roberts took the loss for the Pioneers.

Gould went 4-for-4 at the plate in game two for MU.

The Big Blue improved to 20-9 overall with the sweep, and 17-6 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. Millikin softball will match up against Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis. on Sunday, April 25.
