Softball Outscores Carthage 17-3 in Doubleheader Sweep

Millikin softball took on Carthage in their second doubleheader of the weekend at the Workman Family Softball Field on Saturday, April 3. The Big Blue picked up the sweep, outscoring the Firebirds 17-3 between the two games.

In game one, the Big Blue shut out the Firebirds. The scoring began in the bottom of the third when Rylee Blake led off with a walk then stole second. A Kaylee Goluch single scored Blake. Gretchen Gould later brought Goluch home on a double to left field.

Millikin expanded on their lead in the bottom of the fourth with a Holland triple to left field to start off. She later scored when Trenkle reached on a fielder's choice.

In the sixth, the Big Blue tacked on four more runs to earn the 7-0 victory over the Firebirds. Lexus Tennison walked to kick things off, then advanced to second on a throwing error. A Kailey Pulec single to shortstop advanced Tennison to third, and a stolen base by Pulec put two runners in scoring position. Trenkle singled up the middle to score both Pulec and Tennison. She later scored on a Goluch dobule down the left field line, along with Blake who legged out an infield single to reach base.

Aly Armstrong picked up her eighth win of the season with the shutout, tallying six strikeouts. She held the Firebirds to just three hits.

Millikin struck first in game two, putting two runs on the scoreboard as the visitors. Gould reached on a fielder's choice, then was joined on the basepaths by Tennison after she was issued a walk. Maddie Holland was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and a Pulec single to center field scored Tennison and Gould.

In the bottom of the inning, Carthage struck back and tied the game at two apiece. A single by Rylee Johnson scored Sarah Bennett who had reached on a fielder's choice and Ellie Bernero who had earlier singled to center field.

The Big Blue took the lead again in the top of the fourth with a Tennison double to left field. Pulec reached base on an error, and Trenkle stepped up to the plate to lay down a sacrifice bunt. It turned into a bunt single down the first base line for an RBI when no one was covering first. Blake followed suit with a bunt single down the third base line to load the bases. Goluch sent a deep fly ball to right field for a sacrifice fly, scoring Pulec. Leah Foreman gave the Big Blue a 6-2 lead with a single to left field.

Furthering their lead, Millikin's Camryn Skundberg led off the fifth with an infield single to the shortstop. Tennison notched her second double of the game with a ground-rule double down the left field line that hopped over the fence. A double by Holland to right center scored Tennison and Skundberg. A Pulec groundout to second base scored Holland who advanced to third on a passed ball earlier in Pulec's at bat. Blake reached base again by drawing a walk. Walks issued to Goluch and Foreman loaded the bases, then the fourth walk in a row drawn by Cassie Reed plated Blake for the tenth Millikin run.

Carthage chipped away at the lead with a single from Izzy Hernandez to score Donna Stevens who reached on a fielder's choice.

Bailey Coffman earned the win for Millikin. In her 4.2 innings of work, she held the Firebirds to three hits.

The Big Blue improved to 11-3 in CCIW play with the sweep. Millikin will be back in action in a road doubleheader at Elmhurst University on Friday, April 9.
