Softball Sweeps Twin Bill at Carthage

Millikin softball tallied their second straight doubleheader sweep, taking two from the Firebirds of Carthage College. The Big Blue matched up with the Firebirds in Kenosha, Wis. on Sunday April 25, defeating Carthage 7-2 in game one and 7-3 in game two. 

Millikin struck first in the scoring column in game one with a five run second inning. Gretchen Gould and Lexus Tennison drew back to back walks to start the inning, and Maddie Holland loaded the bases after reaching on a bunt single. Kailey Pulec loaded the bases again after reaching on a fielder's choice. A single off the bat of Rylee Blake plated Tennison and Holland for the first two runs of the game. Kaylee Goluch followed suit with a single up the middle that scored Blake and Pulec. Goluch scored on a single up the middle by Camryn Skundberg to put the Big Blue up 5-0.

The Firebirds scored one in the bottom in the inning when Makenzie Miller doubled to left center and crossed the plate on a single up the middle by Naomi Alonzo. 

The Big Blue added to their lead in the sixth. Blake drew a walk, then scored on a Goluch single up the middle. Goluch scored the final run of game one for MU on an RBI groundout by Skundberg. 

Carthage chipped away again in the bottom of the inning, scoring one run when Bella Spittler crossed home plate on an infield single off the bat of Miller with the bases loaded. 

Aly Armstrong struck out eight in her seven innings of work, only relinquishing six hits to the Firebirds in the win. Stefanie Guercio took the loss for Carthage. Goluch went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Big Blue in game one.

Millikin put up two runs in the bottom of the first inning in game two as the home team on the scoreboard. Goluch, Leah Foreman, and Skundberg rattled off three straight singles to load the bases, and Gould was issued a walk to score Goluch. Foreman scored the second run of the inning on a passed ball. 

The Big Blue tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the second. Skielyr Trenkle singled up the middle and stole second, advancing to third on a single by Blake. Trenkle scored on a groundout RBI by Goluch, and Blake crossed the plate on an infield single by Leah Foreman. Foreman stole second, putting another runner in scoring position for the Big Blue, then scored when Skundberg sent a single to left field. 

Carthage put up a run in the top of the fifth after an Alonzo single put a baserunner on. A single by Alaina Azar moved her to second, and Alonzo scored on a wild pitch. 

Millikin answered in the bottom of the inning. Holland singled up the middle, then stole second. Holland was plated on a single by Trenkle through the left side. The Big Blue expanded their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with Holland crossing the plate again. She reached on a fielder's choice and stole second to put a runner in scoring position, then scored on a Pulec single to left center.

The Firebirds rallied in the top of the seventh, plating two starting with a Maddie Conway double to center, and two singles by Reagan Goluch and Sarah Bennett to move and score Conway. Goluch later scored on a Rylee Johnson single to shortstop. 

Addison Sargent picked up the game two victory for Millikin. The Big Blue stole seven bases in game two to total 11 on the day, and three players, Skundberg, Pulec, and Trenkle, went 3-for-4 at the plate.

Millikin softball improved to 22-9 overall with the sweep, 19-6 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play. The Big Blue will be back in action on Tuesday, April 27 with a home doubleheader against Wheaton College.
