Softball Walks-Off Wheaton on Foreman Home Run in Doubleheader Split

Millikin softball matched up with the Wheaton Thunder on Tuesday, April 27 for a CCIW doubleheader at the Workman Family Softball Field. The Big Blue took game one in a walk-off fashion with a two-run home run off the bat of freshman catcher Leah Foreman in the ninth inning.

Wheaton struck first in the scoring column in game one, batting through their lineup in the first inning. Janette Oh singled to left field to start things off. Ashley Carter and Emilie Gist followed up with back to back Big Blue errors to load the bases. With the bases loaded, Melissa Meiners singled down the left field line to score Carter and Oh. The final run of the inning for the Thunder came on a double steal when Gist crossed the plate.

Millikin chipped away at the early Wheaton lead in the bottom of the inning. Foreman sent a double to left center, then advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt by the Thunder. She was plated when Camryn Skundberg reached on an error by Wheaton.

The Big Blue took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Maddie Holland singled to left field to put a two out baserunner on for MU. Kailey Pulec singled to right center, and an error allowed Holland to cross the plate for the first run of the inning. Skielyr Trenkle drew a walk and Rylee Blake was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Kaylee Goluch singled through the right side to score two, and Foreman reached on an error to notch two RBIs and put Millikin up 6-3 after a five run inning.

Wheaton tied the game in the top of the fifth, starting with the leadoff Gist hit by a pitch. Meiners singled down the left field line to put a second baserunner on for the Thunder. Claire Busch reached on an error, scoring Gist. Meiners later crossed the plate on an error by the Big Blue on a ball sent to deep left field by Paige Andrews. Sarah Major knocked in the tying run on a single down the right field line.

Knotted at six, Holland stepped to the plate in the bottom of the fifth. Holland sent a ball deep to left field off the scoreboard for a solo home run to put Millikin up one.

Wheaton answered in the bottom of the inning with a walk drawn by Oh to lead off. A sacrifice bunt off the bat of Elizabeth Meyer put a runner in scoring position, and Gist drove in Oh with a double to left center.

Tied at seven, the game headed to extra innings. The Big Blue retired three straight Thunder batters in the top of the eighth, then went three up, three down in the bottom of the inning. Andrews singled to left center to put a baserunner on for Wheaton in the top of the ninth, but were unable to plate a runner.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Goluch singled to right field then advanced to second on a wild pitch. With the runner in scoring position, Foreman sealed the game one win for Millikin with a two run home run to left center.

In the 9-7 win, Aly Armstrong was credited with the victory. Armstrong struck out eight in her nine innings of work. For Wheaton, Gist took the loss.

As the visitors on the scoreboard in game two, the Big Blue tallied five hits and did not surrender a strikeout but were defeated 0-1. Addison Sargent only relinquished three hits and struck out four in the loss. Alese Antonello picked up the victory for Wheaton.

The lone run of game two was scored in the bottom of the fifth inning. Elise O'Neil hit an infield single, then was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Meyer. She took third on a groundout by Sydney Heinrich, then crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

Millikin threatened in the top of the sixth inning. Goluch started the inning off with a double to left center, then advanced to third when Skundberg reached on a fielder's choice. Wheaton stifled the rally with a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

With the split, Millikin moved to 23-10 overall, 20-7 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. The Big Blue are scheduled to play their final regular season matchup against North Central in Naperville on Wednesday, April 28.
