Seven Run Seventh Lifts Softball over North Central

Big Blue softball traveled to Naperville, Ill. for the second time this season on Wednesday, April 28 for a makeup game against North Central College. Millikin used a seven run seventh inning to defeat the Cardinals 8-7.

North Central put up the first run of the game in the second inning on a solo home run by Talia Torosian. The Cardinals added four more to take a five run lead in the third. Katie Del Re reached base on a bunt single, then advanced to third on a Jaime Smith single to right field. A walk issued to Emily Miller loaded the bases, and a Breanna Adams single up the middle scored one. With the bases loaded, the game paused for a 30 minute rain delay. Back in action, Dakota Novak sent a double to center that cleared the bases.

The Cardinals added a sixth run in the bottom of the fourth with a home run off the bat of Del Re.

Millikin chipped away at the Cardinal lead in the sixth. Kaylee Goluch drew a walk, Leah Foreman reached on an error, and Camryn Skundberg walked to load the bases. With two outs, Lexus Tennison drew the third walk of the inning to plate Goluch.

Kailey Pulec started the Millikin rally in the seventh with a single to left field. Pulec advanced to third on a Trenkle single to right field. Rylee Blake loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch, and a Goluch infield single scored Pulec. With the bases still loaded, Foreman singled through the right side to score Blake and Trenkle. Gretchen Gould tied the game at six with a two RBI single up the middle. Cassidy Knoerzer checked in to pinch run for Skundberg at third, who reached on a fielder's choice, and Emma Lewandowski took Gould's place at first. Lewandowski stole second, and Knoerzer was able to cross the plate on the throwing error by the Cardinals for the go-ahead run. Millikin tacked on their final run after Pulec doubled to left center, plating Lewandowski.

North Central rallied in the bottom of the inning. The Big Blue picked up their first out on a groundout by Miller, but Adams singled up the middle and Novak reached on an error to put two baserunners on for the Cardinals. A wild pitch moved the runners, but a Torosian groundout gave Millikin two outs. Pinch hitter Elena Stevenson reached on an error to score Adams, but the Big Blue secured the final out to take the 8-7 comeback victory.

Freshman pitcher Charly Warlow picked up her first career win, pitching three innings in relief. Warlow struck out two and allowed one hit in her twelve batters faced. Bailey Coffman started the game for Millikin. Taking the loss for the Cardinals was Gianna Corban.

With the win, Millikin moved to 24-10 overall and 20-7 in CCIW play. The Big Blue are set to match up with the Illinois Wesleyan Titans on Friday, April 30 in Bloomington, Ill. The Big Blue and Titans currently sit in first and second place, respectively, in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin standings.
