Millikin Baseball Downs Titans to Advance in CCIW Tournament

The Millikin baseball team defeated Illinois Wesleyan University 6-3 in the opening round of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Baseball Tournament in a game played at the Workman Family Baseball Field in Decatur on May 19. The Big Blue advance to face the number two seed Augustana College on Thursday, May 20 at Wheaton College's field in Carol Stream, Illinois. The remainder of the tournament will be played at Wheaton's field and at North Central College in Naperville.
 
The Titans took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Ethan Burgh opened in the inning with a walk and scored on a triple from Will Kafer. Kafer scored on a sacrifice fly by Jack Schneider.
 
Millikin took control of the game with a five run fourth inning. With one out, Frank Bryan was hit-by-pitch and later scored on a triple from Brent Beals. Kyle Kane tied the game with a single to right scoring Beals. Millikin loaded the bases after Tanner Coleman was hit and Andrew Auton walked. Garrett Fritz drove home a run with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2 Big Blue. Hunter Smith then drove home two runs with a bloop single to right with Auton scoring all the way from first base on the hit-and-run. Millikin added an insurance run in the seventh when Smith doubled and went to third on a bunt single from Tommy Shaw. Smith then scored on a sacrifice bunt by Gabe Soria.
 
Illinois Wesleyan threatened in the ninth scoring once on an RBI single from Collin Elvers. Millikin's Jared Buzan entered the game with two runners on and no outs. Buzan got a strikeout and ground ball double play to end the game and earn his second save of the season.
 
Adam Zuk was the winning pitcher for Millikin throwing eight innings allowing eight hits and three earned runs while striking out five. Zuk is now 6-1 on the season.
