Softball Defeats Vikings in First Round of CCIW Tournament

The Big Blue softball team played host to the first round of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament on Thursday, May 6 at the Workman Family Softball Field. Millikin matched up against the Augustana Vikings in the first round of play after the Vikings defeated Elmhurst earlier in the day.

With Aly Armstrong on the mound, the Big Blue picked up a 9-5 win to stay in the winner's bracket. Armstrong tallied seven strikeouts in her six innings of work, picking up win number 16 on the season. Nadia Ranieri took the loss for the Vikings.

Augustana got on the board first with a run in the top of the first inning. A Ranieri single to center scored Erin Smith after a Smith double to put the Vikings up one.

Millikin pulled ahead in the bottom of the second. Gretchen Gould was hit by a pitch, and Lexus Tennison walked to put two baserunners on for the Big Blue. After Ranieri tallied her only two strikeouts of the game, Skielyr Trenkle was hit by a pitch to load the bases. An infield single off the bat of Rylee Blake scored pinch runner Sarah Lahner, and Kaylee Goluch marked the second Big Blue batter to be hit by a pitch, plating Tennison. Two wild pitches scored Trenkle and Blake, and Leah Foreman singled to left to drive in the fifth MU run.

The Big Blue tacked on two more runs in the third. Back to back singles by Gould and Tennison put two baserunners on, then a sacrifice bunt from Maddie Holland turned throwing error scored both runners.

Augustana chipped away at the Big Blue lead in the sixth, scoring three runs to bring the game within three. Millikin answered with two runs of their own, starting with a Trenkle double to left field, who later scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Blake. Blake scored on a sacrifice fly from Leah Foreman for the ninth Big Blue run.

The Vikings tacked on another run in the seventh, but Millikin came away with the 9-5 win. The Big Blue will match up against fifth seeded North Central in the second round of play on Saturday, May 8 at the Workman Family Softball Field.
