Millikin Baseball Sweeps Firebirds

The Millikin baseball team swept a doubleheader from Carthage College on May 9 at the Workman Family Baseball Field in Decatur and clinched third place in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) regular season standings. The Big Blue's 4-1 and 6-2 wins give Millikin a 17-12 record in the conference and a 24-13 overall mark.
 
In game one Millikin a single run in the third and three runs in the third, which was more than enough support for starting and winning pitcher Tanner Coleman. Coleman threw a complete game allowing six hits and one run in the ninth inning while striking out eight.
 
Tommy Shaw opened the Millikin first and scored on a ground out from Frank Bryan. In the third, Brent Beals doubled home and run and Andrew Auton hit a two-run home run to put Millikin up 4-0. 
 
Johnny Belskis' doubled home the Firebirds only run in game one.
 
Game two was a pitchers' duel for the first five innings between Millikin starter Jared Buzan and Carthage starter Troy Siranovic. Buzan allowed one hit in five innings recording 12 strikeouts.  Siranovic threw six innings allowing three hits and two runs keeping the Big Blue off the scoreboard until the seventh inning.
 
Carthage scored twice in the sixth inning. Bryce Prybylinski singled home Austin Prybylinski who had opened the inning with a double. Dominic Guido drove home the Firebirds second run with a groundout.
 
Millikin answered with a five run seventh inning. Kyle Kane opened the inning with a walk and scored on Beals double. Lucas Ryan had a RBI groundout to tie the game at 2-2. Millikin took the lead on a run scoring single from Bryan. Shaw and Gabe Soria each added RBI singles to make it 5-2 Millikin. Millikin added a run in the eighth. Beals singled and scored on a double by Auton.  Beals and Soria each had two hits for Millikin in the game.
 
Evan Lawrence earned the win in relief throwing one and two-thirds innings allowing one hit. Kane earned his first career save throwing the final two inning retiring all six batters he faced.
 
Millikin closes out the regular season with a single game at Illinois Wesleyan on May 14 and a doubleheader against the Titans at Millikin on May 15.
