Big Blue Women's Volleyball Picks up First 2021 Victory at Dominican

The Big Blue women's volleyball team started off their 2021 campaign on Wednesday, September 1 with a 3-1 road win in River Forest, Ill. against the Dominican University Stars (14-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-19).

Junior Tori Stuart led the Big Blue in three categories with 16 kills, five service aces, and five blocks. Fellow junior Jessi Kreder added five blocks. Kamryn Flesner added 10 kills, and Lauren Brummel chipped in seven. Behind the service line, newcomer Olivia Grbavac tallied three aces, along with leading Millikin in assists with 29 and digs with 16. Julianna Vassallo tallied 11 digs in the Big Blue's first win.

After dropping the first set 14-25, the Big Blue bounced back to win three straight and earn the victory. The Stars led by as much as 12 in set one, taking a 19-7 lead on a kill by Emily Schellhase and ended the set with a service ace.

MU started off strong in the second set with a kill off the hand of Brummel. Two straight blocks involving Kreder, once with the help of Flesner and once alongside Brummel gave the Big Blue a 5-1 lead. After Millikin jumped out to a 15-8 lead, the Stars climbed their way back into the set with a 7-0 run to knot things up at 15. Sarah Lychock tallied back-to-back service aces to highlight the run for Dominican. The Big Blue fell behind 20-22 before kills from Stuart and Flesner tied the game, and two more kills from Flesner and an ace served up by Stuart capped off a 5-0 run for a 25-22 win in set two.

Millikin once again displayed a strong start in the third set. Four kills by Stuart capped off a 7-1 start with Grbavac behind the service line. With the Big Blue up 24-13 after a kill from Flesner, Dominican fought back to tally three straight points, but their rally ended in a 25-16 loss after a service error.

Game four saw a more tightly contested start, with the game tied on six occasions before 11-11. A kill from Stuart, followed by two blocks by Sophia Gibbs and Stuart and two service aces by Grbavac gave Millikin a 17-11 lead. Another short run by Millikin put the Big Blue up by a score of 23-14, and the win was secured with a block from Brummel and Kreder, 25-19.

Millikin's season continues on Friday, September 3 and Saturday, September 4 at the Central-Grinnell Invitational in Grinnell, Iowa. The Big Blue will match up with the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, Grinnell College, and Cornell College in their first tournament of the season.
