Women's Volleyball Undefeated on Day One of Millikin Invitational

Millikin women's volleyball took the court in the Griswold Center in Decatur, Ill. for the first time in the 2021 season on Friday, September 17 for day one of the Millikin Invitational. The Big Blue were undefeated on day one of competition picking up a three set sweep over Webster and a win in a five set thriller against Greenville. 

During the second match of the day against the Panthers, Kamryn Flesner reached the milestone of 1,000 career collegiate kills. Flesner, who transferred from MacMurray College prior to the 2020-21 academic year, recorded her first 817 kills as a Highlander. 

In the first matchup of the day, the Big Blue were led by Tori Stuart and Flesner at the net, who each tallied 14 kills in the victory. Olivia Grbavac was credited with 35 set assists and 12 digs, and Julianna Vassallo added 12 digs. Kailee Itzenhuiser and Anna Deutschmann notched two service aces apiece. In each of the three sets, MU hit no lower than .200, with a high percentage of .387 in set two. 

Set one was highlighted by an 8-0 run with Itzenhuiser behind the service line to break the 14-14 tie and put the Big Blue ahead by a 21-14 margin. The set was capped off by back-to-back kills of the hand of Stuart to defeat the Gorloks 25-17. 

Webster kept things close at the beginning of set two, but the Big Blue pulled away late in the set and finished out with kills from Deutschmann and Brummel to pick up another 25-17 victory.

The Gorloks jumped out to a 1-4 lead in the third set. Millikin used a mid-set run with Stuart serving to pull ahead 19-8. The Big Blue's 25-15 match point was secured on a kill from Jessi Kreder

In the second match of the day, Stuart once again led MU at the net with 23 kills. Flesner added 15 and Kreder added nine. Stuart notched a team high three aces and both Stuart and Sophia Gibbs tallied five blocks. Grbavac tallied 48 assists, and Vassallo added 17 digs. 

The Panthers held on in set one for a 22-25 win. The Big Blue rallied after falling down 18-22 to tighten the score at 21-23. A kill from Greenville's Jasmin Smith secured the first set victory for the Panthers. 

Millikin used a short mid-set run to tie the set at 14 after the Panthers pulled ahead early in the set. A service ace off the hand of Stuart highlighted the run. Greenville tied the set at each numererical point past 20, but kills from Stuart and Flesner gave MU the 27-25 win. 

Set three was dominated by the Big Blue from the start, keeping a seven to eight point cushion at nearly every point in the match after gaining a 10-3 lead early in the set. Greenville rallied near the end, but took the 25-19 loss on a service error. 

The Panthers tied things up in the fourth set with a decisive 18-25 victory over the Big Blue and send the match to the fifth set. Millikin jumped out to a 4-0 lead with Grbavac serving and extended their lead to 10-1 on another run with Stuart serving in set five. A kill off the hand of Kreder signaled match point for a 15-7 victory in the fifth set. 

With the 2-0 record on the day, the Big Blue moved to 8-1 on the season. Day two of the Millikin Invitational is set to kick off from the Griswold Center with a neutral site game at 10:00 AM on Saturday, September 18. The Big Blue will take on Central College in their first matchup at 2:00 PM and meet Illinois College in a 6:00 PM matchup.
