Women's Tennis Sneaks Past Carthage in CCIW Matchup

Box Score The Big Blue women's tennis team traveled to Kenosha, Wis. on Friday, October 7 for a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin matchup. Millikin is set to match up against Carroll in their second match of the Wisconsin weekend on Saturday, October 8. Millikin took their first match of the weekend by a 5-4 margin.

In doubles play, the team of Nikol Obradovic and D Galvan picked up the first victory over the team of Manojlovic/Mendes at No. 2 by a score of 8-3. The Firebirds evened the score with Giana Apostoli and Xingchen Liu defeating Paige Willer and Emily Markus at No. 1 4-8. The No. 3 doubles team of Katarina Carlberg and Alexandra Ristfeldt shifted the momentum back into the Big Blue's favor heading into singles play with an 8-7 (7-5) win over Sierra Sonnemaker and Marie Weis of the Firebirds.

On the singles side, Carthage took the first W when Sonnemaker defeated Taylor Milholland at No. 5 in twin 0-6 sets, then took the 2-3 advantage when Liu took down Obradovic at No. 1 in 5-7, 2-6 sets. At No. 6, the Firebirds picked up their fourth win of the day when Weis defeated Carlberg 3-6, 4-6.

The Big Blue got back on track in the second half of singles play, first with Brianna Barconi defeating Luana da Silva 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4. Then, Markus took down Apostoli by retirement at No. 2, and Willer recorded the final victory at No. 3, falling in the first set 1-6 before bouncing back in set two and three to win 6-3 each time.

Millikin will match up against the Pioneers of Carroll University Saturday, looking to secure their second CCIW win of the weekend.
