Big Blue Men Improve to 5-1

The Millikin men's basketball team improved to 5-1 on the season with an 82-78 win over Lake Forest College on November 26 at the Griswold Center in Decatur, Illinois.
 
The game featured four lead changes with five ties. The Big Blue lead 41-39 at halftime and built a 12 point lead with 9:06 left in the game. Millikin was up 76-65 with 6:37 to play after a basket by Trent Champagne. Lake Forest then went on an 11-0 run and tied the game at 76-76 on a basket by Alex Knight with 3:05 to go. Millikin's Drake Stevenson hit two free throws with 1:30 remaining in the game to put the Big Blue up 78-76. The Big Blue extend the lead to 80-76 on two free throws by Champagne with 15 seconds left to play. Knight pulled the Foresters to 80-78 with seven second remaining, but Millikin sealed the win with two free throws from JT Welch in the final seconds.
 
Millikin shot 31-67 (46 percent) from the field and made 6-20 (30 percent) from the three-point arc. The Big Blue were 14-18 from the free throw line.
Lake Forest shot 52 percent (28-54) from the field and made 9-18 from three-point range. The Foresters connected on 13-17 from the free throw line.
 
Millikin won the rebounding battle 31-28. The Big Blue had 17 offense rebounds leading to 19 second chance points.
 
Cole Laurence scored 16 points to lead the Big Blue along with a team high nine rebounds and two assists. Stevenson finished with 12 points and five rebounds followed by Demarcus Bond with 11 points, five assists and three rebounds. Freshman Nate Straughter came off the Millikin bench to score 11 points.
 
Elijah Bull led the Foresters with 20 points followed by Noah Deitch with 14 and Rocco Ronzio with 13.
 
Millikin opens College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) play on Wednesday, November 30 at 7 p.m. hosting North Park University.
