Softball Picks up Two Victories on Opening Weekend, Defeats Buena Vista, Franklin

The Big Blue softball team welcomed three teams to the Workman Family Softball Field on Sunday, February 27 for an opening weekend tournament. Millikin matched up with the Beavers of Buena Vista University in the first game of the day, followed by an evening matchup with the Grizzlies of Franklin College.

Against Buena Vista, the Big Blue found themselves in the scoring column first after freshman center fielder Lanie Chizmark singled to right field then stole second. Freshman right fielder Julia Lopanec added another baserunner for the Big Blue by drawing a walk, hten senior left fielder Grace Biondo singled to center to score Chizmark. Senior first baseman Kaylee Goluch sent a single up the middle to plate Lopanec and Biondo, giving MU a 3-0 advantage.

Buena Vista chipped away at the Millikin lead in the top of the fourth, stringing together a walk drawn by Wendt, a Miller double to center, then a sacrifice fly to score Wendt and cut the Big Blue lead to 3-1.

The Big Blue tallied four more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, starting with a Rylee Blake double to left field. Lopanec laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Blake, who later scored on a single to right center by Biondo. Millikin loaded the bases after Goluch reached on an error and Gretchen Gould was hit by a pitch, but a Maddy Regan RBI groundout scored Biondo. Pinch runner Kendallyn Davison and Goluch scored when Jada Wilson reached on a Beavers error.

Biondo's triple to right center in the bottom of the first was the first runs in an offensive flood by the Big Blue. Blake and Lopanec scored two runs, then Biondo tallied a third on a sacrifice fly to center by Goluch.

Millikin's offense was back in the bottom of the second with Lex Tennison beginning the strike with a double to left field. Chizmark walked, then an infield single off the bat of Blake loaded the bases. A Lopanec single through the right side scored Chizmark and Tennison, then a Biondo single gave her two more RBIs to add to the day's tally. Goluch sent a triple to right field to plate Biondo, then later scored on a Gretchen Gould double to center.

Millikin tallied two final runs in the third and fourth innings. Tennison's single through the right side of the infield scored the tenth run when Blake reached on a fielder's choice.

Biondo tallied another hit in the fourth inning with a triple to center field, then later scored on a pinch hit single up the middle by Cassie Reed. Biondo went 3-for-3 in game two with four RBIs.
