Softball Sweeps Fontbonne, Wins Game Two in Walk-Off Fashion

The Big Blue softball team swept Fontbonne in a doubleheader at the Workman Family Softball Field on Friday, March 4.

The Big Blue started off the scoring in game one in the bottom of the third. Lex Tennison opened the inning with a double to center field, then Rylee Blake reached on a walk. A Grace Biondo single through the right side of the infield scored two.

Fontbonne chipped away at the Big Blue lead starting with a Gracie Harlin triple to center, later scoring on an Ellie Bartlett single to right field.

Millikin held a 2-1 advantage heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. A Gretchen Gould walk put a runner on first, then pinch runner Katie Detamore advanced to third on a ground-rule double off the bat of Leah Foreman. Jada Wilson reached on an error, scoring Detamore and advancing Foreman to third. Emma Lewandowski checked in to pinch run for Foreman and scored on a failed pickoff attempt. A Tennison single to right center scored Wilson, then a Lanie Chizmark single to center put two runners on for MU. Blake plated Tennison on a single to left center, then Kendallyn Davison sent a triple to right field to score Blake and Chizmark. Davison later scored on a Biondo groundout to end the game in the sixth for a 9-1 Millikin victory.

Aly Armstrong picked up her second victory of the season, striking out two and giving up only two hits in her six innings of work.

In game two, Millikin struck first when Blake reached first after being hit by a pitch, stealing second and third, then scoring on a Biondo groundout. Fontbonne evened the score in the top of the second when Ellie Bartlett walked, then later scored on a passed ball.

The Big Blue jumped back out in front in the bottom of the second. Gould opened the inning with a single up the middle, then a Foreman single to left field advanced Gould to third. Gould scored on a Griffin error when Foreman stole second. Sarah Lahner replaced Foreman at second, then crossed the plate when Maddy Regan sent a homerun over the left field fence.

Fontbonne quickly lessened the margin in the top of the third starting, starting with Grace Morris reaching on a hit by pitch. A fielder's choice combined with a Big Blue error put runners on first and second, then a walk issued to Bartlett loaded the bases. A Patience Vandermierde single scored one, then a groundout off the bat of Abby Richmond tallied a third run for the Griffins.

In the fifth, Davison notched another timely hit in her first at bat of game two with a double to left field, then later scored when Biondo reached base on a Fontbonne error. Millikin plated two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, starting with a Gould single to left field and a walk issued to Foreman. Regan reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases, then a single off the bat of Tennison scored two.

Fontbonne put up four runs in the top of the seventh, then held the Big Blue scoreless in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.

The Griffins tallied one run in the top of the eighth. A Grace Morris single to center put a baserunner on for the Griffins, then she advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Hannah Miener. Kassidy Chrisco entered as a pinch runner, then crossed the plate on a wild pitch to give Fontbonne a one-run lead heading into the bottom of the inning.

Millikin won in walk-off fashion, starting off the inning with a walk issued to Anna Enlow. After Enlow advanced to second, Tennison sent a single up the middle to plate Enlow. Chizmark roped a line drive down the left field line to score Tennison and give Millikin the 9-8 game two victory.

Charly Warlow was the victor in the circle after her one inning of work to tally her first victory of the season.
