Softball Holds off Hiram's Late Rally to Pick up Win on Day Two in Florida

The Big Blue softball team adjusted their day two schedule in Leesburg, Florida on Friday, March 12 due to inclement weather. Instead of matchups with Catholic University and Rowan University, Millikin softball matched up against the Terriers of Hiram College in a nighttime game at the Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex.

Millikin found themselves in the scoring column first, scoring their first run with two outs in the bottom of the second inning. Cassie Reed reached base on an infield single, then Gretchen Gould drew a walk. After back-to-back fielder's choice outs at third base, Millikin scratched in a run when Lanie Chizmark singled to left field and Kaylee Goluch crossed the plate.

After holding the Terriers scoreless in the third, the Big Blue relinquished a run when Giselle Bahena started off the inning with a single to left field. A sacrifice bunt off the bat of Angel Santellan put Bahena in scoring position for the Kylie Perez RBI double to left center to tie the score at 1-1.

Millikin struck back in the bottom of the fourth. Gould drew another walk to put a runner on. Goluch laid down a sacrifice bunt, then Chizmark reached on a Terrier error and advanced Gould to third. Rylee Blake stepped to the plate, sending an RBI single through the left side to score Gould. Kendallyn Davison ripped a single to center to plate Chizmark, then a Leah Foreman double to deep center field scored the speedy Blake and Davison.

The Big Blue tacked on two more runs to take a 7-1 lead in the fifth, starting with a Cassie Reed double to left field. Goluch doubled to center to score Reed, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Lex Tennison sent a sacrifice fly to center to plate Goluch.

Hiram rallied in the top of the sixth, tallying a run by capitalizing on a Millikin fielding error and a Bahena double to right center. The Terriers threatened again in the top of the seventh. A walk issued to Perez started the inning, then Abriana Schwartz hit a ground ball to third base to put two runners on. A failed pickoff attempt at first base advanced both runners, allowing a run to score. The Terriers notched one final run when Larissa Baeza sent a double to left field, but Aly Armstrong secured the final out on a strikeout to pick up the 7-4 win.

Armstrong picked up her fourth win of the season, striking out 11 and allowing 5 hits.

Millikin will be back on the diamonds in Florida on Monday, March 14 with matchups slated against Western New England University and Fredonia.
