#20 Millikin Softball Downs Two East Coast Opponents, Falls to #18 Rowan

The #20 Big Blue softball team took the field after an off day in Florida, playing three games back-to-back-to-back on Monday, March 14. Millikin began their day with two east coast opponents in Western New England University and Fredonia State University, followed by a ranked matchup with #18 Rowan.

Kelsey Bruno toed the rubber for her collegiate debut in game one against Western New England. As the visitors on the scoreboard, the Big Blue struck first starting with a Rylee Blake single up the middle. After stealing second and advancing to third on a Kendallyn Davison groundout, Leah Foreman sent a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Blake. The second Millikin run was manufactured starting with a Grace Biondo single to right field. Cassie Reed singled to right center to advance Biondo to third. Reed stole second, and on Western New England's attempt to undermine the steal, Biondo was credited with stealing home for the second MU run.

Bruno retired all three batters in her first inning of work, posting strikeouts for outs one and two then Blake caught a line drive for the third out.

In the top of the second, the Big Blue exploded to post an 8-0 advantage. Kaylee Goluch singled up the middle to open the inning, then a Lex Tennison double down the right field line advanced Goluch to third. Lanie Chizmark reached base on a fielder's choice, as Goluch was thrown out at the plate. A Golden Bears error allowed Blake to reach base, then Davison reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Foreman was hit with a pitch to plate one, then Biondo drew a walk to score another. After WNE made a pitching change, Reed was hit by a pitch, then a bases loaded Gretchen Gould single up the middle scored two.

Western New England posted a run in the bottom of the fourth, with back-to-back hits allowing Dina DiBlasi to cross the plate with a Kailey Carra double to left field. The back-to-back hits were the only two hits allowed by Bruno in the game.

The Big Blue responded once again to further their lead. Gould was hit by a pitch to open the inning, then Anna Enlow replaced her on first. After stealing second and advancing to third, Goluch put a second baserunner on by drawing a walk. Tennison doubled down the left field line to score two then later scored on a Davison single to left center. Maddy Regan made her first appearance at the plate on the day and sent a double to center to score two.

Millikin closed out the 13-1 win to give Bruno her first career collegiate win. In the five inning contest, Bruno struck out 11, allowed just two hits and walked one.

Game two saw Addison Sargent on the mound against Fredonia State University. Millikin struck first once again in the bottom of the first with Blake leading the way with an infield single. Davison reached base on a bunt single and Blake advanced to third, later scoring on an error by the Blue Devils. After Davison advanced to third on a wild pitch, she crossed the plate on Foreman's sacrifice fly to center.

In a productive bottom of the second inning, Gould started the rally with a walk. Sarah Lahner pinch ran for Gould, stole second, then scored on Goluch's double to center. Tennison doubled to trade places with Goluch and plate another run. Chizmark reached base on an error by the Blue Devils, then Blake reached on a bunt single. Julia Lopanec laid down a sacrifice bunt in her first at bat of the day. Chizmark crossed the plate on a wild pitch, then Foreman's steal attempt after drawing a walk allowed Blake to steal home. In Gould's second at bat of the inning, she singled to plate Biondo and Foreman.

With a 9-0 lead, the Big Blue made some substitutions. Emma Lewandowski entered the game in center and singled in her first at bat. Blake laid down a bunt single, then when she stole second, Lewandowski scored. Lopanec was hit by a pitch and Regan walked. Blake crossed the plate on a Blue Devil error, then Emma Cooper reached on an error, scoring Lopanec. Camryn Skundberg recorded a hit with her single to left field, scoring Regan. Cooper later scored on Lewandowski's second single of the inning to give the Big Blue a 14-0 lead.

Sargent picked up the game two win to improve to 4-0 on the season. She allowed just two hits while striking out 10 in her four innings of work. Charly Warlow provided an inning of relief for MU, allowing just one hit.

In the final matchup of the day, Millikin matched up against a fellow ranked opponent in Rowan University. Rowan started the scoring, starting with a walk issued to Payton MacNair. Liz McCaffrey laid down a sacrifice bunt, then reached on an error to put a second baserunner on. Morgan Zane sent a double to left field to plate MacNair, then a Kaitlyn Riggs single to center scored McCaffrey.

Rowan tacked on six more runs in the top of the third, highlighted by a MacNair bases-clearing double down the left field line to tally three RBI.

The Big Blue chipped away at the deficit in the bottom of the fifth. Tennison singled up the middle, then Lewandowski walked to put a second baserunner on. Blake laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners, then Tennison scored on a wild pitch. Davison singled up the middle to score Lewandowski. The final run scored on a pickoff play when Biondo was thrown out between first and second after Davison crossed home.

Rowan picked up one final run in the top of the sixth when Zane tallied another RBI with a single to left field.

Aly Armstrong was credited with the loss after three innings of work. Rowan tallied four hits. Sargent posted four innings in relief, allowing four hits.

After the 2-1 day in Clermont, Fla., the Big Blue improve to 10-2 on the season. Millikin will be back in action on Tuesday, March 15 at the Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex in Leesburg, Fla. against Stockton University and the University of New England.
