Big Blue Softball Uses Offensive Surge, Sargent's No-Hitter to Pick up Two Five-Inning Wins

The Big Blue softball team followed up their busy Monday of three games with two five-inning games on Tuesday, March 15. Millikin matched up with Stockton University in game one for a 10-0 victory before meeting the University of New England in an afternoon game at the Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex in Leesburg, Fla.

In game one, Addison Sargent tossed a no-hitter against the Ospreys of Stockton University, walking just three batters and striking out three in her five innings of work. 

Kendallyn Davison and Lexus Tennison each went 2-for-3 at the plate with Davison notching three RBI and Tennison posting four RBI. Kaylee Goluch went 2-for-2 at the plate. 

After being held scoreless in their first at-bat, the Big Blue went to work on offense in the top of the second. Gretchen Gould began the inning by reaching after being hit by a pitch. Grace Biondo drew a walk to put a second baserunner on, then Goluch reached on a bunt single down the first baseline. Tennison roped a single down the left field line to plate two. Goluch later scored on a passed ball. Rylee Blake drew the second walk of the inning, then she and Tennison scored on a Davison single to center. 

With a 5-0 advantage, the Big Blue continued to hold the Ospreys scoreless, including a hit-saving play by Gould on a line shot down the third baseline in the bottom of the fourth. 

In the top of the fifth, the Big Blue tacked on five more. Cassie Reed drew a walk and was replaced on base by pinch runner Sarah Lahner. Gould and Biondo each reached after being hit by pitches to load the bases for MU. Goluch singled up the middle to plate two, then a Tennison single down the right field line scored two more. The final Millikin run was scored by Tennison on a Davison single up the middle. 

After the 10-0 five-inning win over Stockton, Millikin quickly shifted the focus to the University of New England. Aly Armstrong was in the circle in game two, picking up her fifth win of the season in four innings of work. Armstrong struck out six and gave up just two hits. Charly Warlow provided an inning of relief. 

Millikin kept the offensive firepower going in game two starting right away in the bottom of the first. Davison reached base after being hit by a pitch then stole second. Leah Foreman drew a walk to put a second baserunner on, then Reed walked to load the bases. Gould sent a single to right center to plate two. Biondo singled to plate Reed. Goluch's single to center scored Gould. Tennison walked to load the bases before Biondo scored on a wild pitch. Blake singled up the middle to plate Tennison and Goluch and give Millikin a 7-0 lead. 

The Big Blue tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the second starting with a Davison triple to left field. Foreman sent a double to left to score Davison, then later scored after Gould reached on an error and stole second. 

The final Millikin run was scored in the bottom of the third. Blake drew a walk, then stole second. Blake later scored on Amelia Ayotte's first career collegiate hit, a single to left field. 

Millikin will continue their campaign in Florida on Thursday, March 17 at Hancock Park in Clermont, Fla. when they match up against Defiance College and Roger Williams University.
