Millikin Softball Edges Defiance, Roger Williams for 2-0 Day in Clermont

The Millikin softball team matched up against Defiance College and Roger Williams University on Thursday, March 17 at Hancock Park in Clermont, Fla. In two close competitions, the Big Blue came away with two victories.

In game one, after a scoreless first as the visitors on the scoreboard, the Big Blue tacked two on in the top of the second. Cassie Reed led off the inning with a single up the middle. Gretchen Gould laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Reed, then Reed crossed the plate on a Grace Biondo single to right field. Biondo made her way to second on a wild pitch, then later scored on a Lex Tennison single up the middle.

Defiance chipped away at the Big Blue lead in the bottom of the second starting with Sophie Moller drawing a walk. Natalee Cooper sent a double to right center to plate Moller to cut the MU lead to 2-1.

Millikin added a third run in the top of the fourth. Gould drew a walk, then was replaced on first by pinch runner Sarah Lahner. Biondo executed a sacrifice bunt, then Kaylee Goluch advanced Lahner to third with a groundout. Tennison tallied her second hit of the day with an infield single to score Lahner.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Yellow Jackets used a one-out homerun over the left center fence off the bat of Marissa Roberts to start a rally. Brooke Silcox and Kalin Hubble notched back to back singles, then a walk issued to Coil loaded the bases. Defiance came away with one run on a Josilyn Guzman single through the left side, but back-to-back flyouts sent the game to extra innings.

In the top of the eighth with the international tiebreaker rule in effect, Millikin placed Katie Detamore on second base, then moved her to third on a sacrifice bunt by Reed. Gould reached base on an infield single, plating Detamore for the first Millikin run. Biondo reached base on a single through the right side, then a Tennison double to left field scored two. Emma Lewandowski's bunt single scored Tennison to put the Big Blue up 7-3 heading to the bottom of the inning.

In the bottom of the inning, Cooper was placed on second. A single off the bat of Hali Geraci put two runners on for the Yellow Jackets. After picking up the first out with a strikeout, Aly Armstrong exited the game and Charly Warlow entered in relief. The Big Blue tallied the second out on a fielder's choice, taking out the lead runner on a ball hit to shortstop. Defiance tacked on one run with a Silcox single through the left side, but the final out was secured on a foul fly ball caught by Goluch.

Tennison was 4-for-4 at the plate in game one with 4 RBI.

Armstrong picked up her sixth win of the season in 7.1 innings of work, striking out 12. Warlow earned her first save of the season, giving up just one hit in the 7-4 eight-inning victory.

In a quick moving game two, the Big Blue scored just one run in the bottom of the fourth against Roger Williams to take a 1-0 victory. Reed singled up the middle, the Lahner checked in to pinch run. Gould laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Lahner, then Biondo sent a single up the middle to plate Lahner.

The Hawks threatened in the top of the fifth, placing two runners on base after drawing walks. A single to left field by Lia Nocella made for a play at the plate, with the Big Blue relay in time to get the out and end the inning.

Roger Williams had another scoring opportunity in the top of the seventh, starting with an Alex Burdick single through the left side. A sacrifice bunt moved Burdick to second, and she advanced to third on a wild pitch. Two straight flyouts secured the final two outs for the Big Blue.

Addison Sargent was the winning pitcher, striking out seven in her seven innings of work and allowing six hits.

With the wins, Millikin improves to 14-2 on the season. The Big Blue will play their remaining two spring break games in Clermont, Fla. on Friday, March 18 against Benedictine University and the University of Wisconsin-Stout.
