Millikin Softball Finishes 10-2 Florida Campaign With Wins over Benedictine, UW Stout

The Big Blue softball team finished out their 10-2 trip to THE Spring Games in Florida with a 2-0 day in Clermont, Fla. on Friday, March 18. Millikin defeated a pair of fellow midwestern opponents in Benedictine and the University of Wisconsin-Stout. 

In game one, Aly Armstrong toed the rubber against the Eagles of Benedictine University. After a scoreless top of the first inning, the Big Blue offense went to work. Kendallyn Davison sent a single to right center, then stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball to quickly move around the bases. Leah Foreman drew a walk then stole second to put two runners in scoring position for MU. A Cassie Reed single to left center plated both Foreman and Davison. Reed later scored on a Grace Biondo double to right center to give the Big Blue a 3-0 advantage. 

Lex Tennison singled to center in the bottom of the second to start a slew of offense. Emma Lewandowski laid down a sacrifice bunt, but reached on a throwing error to put two runners on for Millikin. Rylee Blake drew a walk to load the bases, then Davison's second base hit of the day plated two. After a Benedictine pitching change, Blake scored on a wild pitch. A Gretchen Gould single up the middle plated Davison, then Gould crossed the plate when Biondo reached base on an Eagle error. Kaylee Goluch sent a single to left center to keep the inning going. Tennison's second hit of the inning was a two-RBI double to right center, scoring Goluch and Biondo to put the Big Blue up 10-0. 

Benedictine tallied a run in the top of the fourth, starting with Leah Navarro reaching on a Big Blue error. An Ashley Fisher double to left field plated an unearned Navarro to cut the Millikin lead to 10-1. 

Five Millikin hitters went 2-for-3 from the plate in the 10-1 game one victory. Armstrong picked up her seventh win of the season in four innings of work, allowing two hits and striking out one. Charly Warlow entered in the fifth to provide an inning of relief. 

In game two, Millikin matched up with the Blue Devils from the University of Wisconsin-Stout. 

The Big Blue snuck a run across in the first, starting with a walk drawn by Blake. Davison laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Blake to second. Gould singled through the right side of the infield to score Blake and give Millikin a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first. 

The Big Blue added another in the top of the second, beginning the inning with a triple to right center off the bat of Biondo. Goluch roped a double to center to plate Biondo and put MU up 2-0. 

Continuing the offensive firepower, Millikin added five runs in the top of the third. Davison began the inning with a double to center, then Leah Foreman reached base on catcher's interference. Reed sent a double down the left field line to score Davison and foreman. Gould added a second baserunner when Gould was hit by a pitch. A Biondo single to center loaded up the bases. After a Blue Devil pitching change, Reed scored on a wild pitch. Goluch notched her second double of the game to plate Biondo and Gould for a 7-0 Big Blue lead. 

Held scoreless for the next three innings, MU's offense exploded in the top of the seventh. Gould started the inning with a single up the middle. Anna Enlow entered the game to pinch run, then scored when Biondo hit a double to right center. Goluch singled up the middle to score Biondo. Lanie Chizmark entered the game in center and drew a walk. Camryn Skundberg reached on an error by Stout to load the bases. Julia Lopanec reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Chizmark. Maddy Regan entered the game and singled through the left side. Jada Wilson tallied the final hit for the Big Blue with a single up the middle to score Lopanec and give Millikin a 12-0 advantage.

Stout plated one run in the bottom of the inning to end the game with a score of 12-1. 

Addison Sargent was the winning pitcher to move to 7-0 on the season. Sargent recorded two strikeouts and allowed just one hit. Warlow entered the game to pitch two innings in relief, allowing two hits and striking out one. 

With the 2-0 day, the Big Blue finished off their trip to Florida with a 10-2 record to move to 16-2 overall. Millikin will return to the Workman Family Softball Field in Decatur, Ill. for back-to-back doubleheaders on Saturday, March 26 and Sunday, March 27 against Coe College and Lake Forest College.
