Softball Sweeps Lake Forest, Heads into CCIW Play with 18-2 Record

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Big Blue softball team matched up with the Foresters of Lake Forest College on Sunday, March 27 at the Workman Family Softball Field in Decatur, Ill. Millikin was victorious in the first game of the day, defeating Lake Forest 7-4.

The Foresters found themselves in the scoring column first, tallying a run in the top of the first inning. Josie Klein drew a walk to put a baserunner on, then advanced to second on a base hit by Angelle Bills to left. A Hailey Boylan single to center scored Klein to give Lake Forest a one run advantage.

Millikin got to work in the bottom of the inning offensively, batting through the entire lineup. Kendallyn Davison put the first baserunner on with a single up the middle, then Leah Foreman was hit by a pitch to put two on for the senior designated player, Cassie Reed. Reed delivered with a double to right center to plate Davison and Foreman. Grace Biondo stepped to the plate and sent a single through the left side of the infield, advancing Reed to third and putting herself in scoring position on the attempted throw to third. Senior first baseman Kaylee Goluch singled up the middle to earn two RBI and put another baserunner on for the Big Blue, followed by a Lex Tennison single. Emma Lewandowski picked up two RBI with an infield single, giving Millikin a 6-1 lead heading into the second inning.

Lake Forest chipped away at the Big Blue lead in the top of the second, starting with a bunt single by Teagan Delarwelle, with an errant throw helping her advance to third. After a walk drawn by Kelly Collins, the Big Blue picked up an out on a Forester strikeout. Caeli Kinsella laid down a sacrifice bunt to plate Delarwelle and cut the lead to 6-2.
In the bottom of the third, Millikin scored their seventh and final run starting with Biondo's double down the right field line. Tennison notched an RBI with a single to left field that allowed Biondo to cross the plate and push the Big Blue lead to 7-2.

Lake Forest scored another run in the top of the sixth, beginning the inning with a leadoff walk issued to Elena Chrisman. A Millikin error put another baserunner on while Chrisman crossed the plate. The Foresters threatened once again in the top of the seventh, starting with a walk drawn by Delarwelle, followed by a Big Blue error and Kaylee Purgatorio being hit by a pitch to load the bases. A Chrisman groundout tabbed the second out of the inning, but Delarwelle crossed the plate. A looking strikeout dealt by Aly Armstrong ended game one with a 7-4 victory.

In the circle, Armstrong picked up her eighth win of the season, striking out 10 and allowing four hits in her 7.0 innings of work.

In game two, Millikin struck first in the scoring column starting with a walk issued to Blake. Davison laid down a sacrifice bunt, then Blake stole third to put a runner in scoring position. Foreman sent a ground-rule double over the left center field fence to plate Blake and give Millikin a 1-0 advantage.

The Big Blue tacked on two more in the bottom of the second, starting another inning with a leadoff walk, this time drawn by Biondo. After a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Goluch advanced Biondo, Lewandowski drew a walk to put a second baserunner on. Blake cleared the bases with a triple to center field and was credited with two RBI, giving Millikin a 3-0 lead.
Millikin pushed the lead to 4-0 in the fourth when Tennison started with a single through the right side, then Lewandowski moved her to second on a sacrifice bunt. Blake delivered her third RBI of the game with a single through the right side to plate Tennison.

The Big Blue scored their fifth and final run in the fifth. Reed drew a walk and was replaced on base by pinch runner Lanie Chizmark who later scored after a Gretchen Gould single to center and Biondo reaching on a fielder's choice.

Lake Forest rallied to post a run in the top of the sixth when Boylan went from first to home after drawing a walk, crossing the plate on a double to center off the bat of Cheyenne Pellettiere.

Addison Sargent improved to 8-0 on the season, striking out five and allowing five hits through six innings of work. Charly Warlow provided a scoreless inning of relief, forcing three consecutive groundouts in the top of the seventh.

With the doubleheader sweep, Big Blue softball moves to 18-2 overall heading into College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin play, beginning on Saturday, April 2 against Wheaton College at the Workman Family Softball Field.
