Millikin Softball Downs North Central in Opening CCIW Tournament Matchup

Box Score The Big Blue softball team battled the rain as the matched up against the Cardinals of North Central College on Friday, May 6 for their first-round matchup in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin softball tournament.

As the #1 seed, Millikin awaited the winner of #4 North Central vs. #5 Carthage, with North Central proving victorious in a 10-0 game.

The Big Blue took the lead in the third inning when Gretchen Gould reached base on an infield single, then crossed the plate on a two-run homerun down the right field line off the bat of Kendallyn Davison.

Millikin tacked on another in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead when Cassie Reed delivered an RBI single to plate Grace Biondo.

North Central tied the contest in the top of the fifth on a Sarah Lynch triple that cleared the bases, then scored on a Millikin throwing error.

The Big Blue used a myriad of bunts in the bottom of the fifth to regain the lead and plate two with Leah Foreman picking up an RBI on a bunt single up the middle.

Aly Armstrong pitched a complete game, striking out seven and giving up just six hits.

The Big Blue advance in the winner's bracket, matching up against the Titans of Illinois Wesleyan at 12:00 PM from the Workman Family Softball Field on Saturday, May 7.
