Big Blue Split with Benedictine

The Millikin baseball team split a doubleheader with Benedictine on February 25 at the Workman Family Baseball Field in Decatur.  The Eagles, who just like the Big Blue, received votes in the D3baseball.com Pre-Season Top 25 poll, took game one by a score of 5-4. Millikin responded in game two with an 11-0 shutout.
In game one, Millikin jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Liam McGill scored on a passed ball in the first inning. Three innings later, the Big Blue would push the lead to 3-0 on a two RBI double from catcher Ryan Janssen.

Starting pitcher Caleb Buehrle held the Eagles scoreless through four, allowing only one hit. Benedictine got to him and would rally for four runs in the fifth, however, to take a 4-3 lead. They would score again on an error in the 7th to make it 5-4. Tyler Gade would score for Millikin in the seventh on an RBI groundout from Tommy Shaw to make it a one game, but Millikin's comeback effort would fall short in the ninth

Sean Shook threw 4.1 innings out of the bullpen for Millikin, allowing only one unearned run and two hits, while striking out six Eagles.
In game two, the Big Blue stalled out of the gates, held scoreless in the first two frames by Benedictine starter John Creviston. The offense would explode in the next two innings, putting up all 11 runs Millikin would need to split the day.

In the third, the Big Blue scored six runs thanks to a huge two-out rally that started with a Tyler Gade walk. Liam McGill then reached on an infield single. Kyle Gibson got Millikin on the board with an RBI single, scoring Gade. Tommy Shaw then singled to load the bases. For a second consecutive game, it was Ryan Janssen who would give Millikin a 3-0 lead, this time with a two RBI single, scoring McGill and Gibson. Andy Niebrugge kept the rally alive with a two RBI double to score Shaw and Janssen to stretch the lead to 5. Hunter Smith singled home Niebrugge for the final run of the inning.

In the fourth, another Tyler Gade walk sparked a Big Blue rally. This time, McGill tripled home Gade. Kyle Gibson would push the lead to eight with a single to score McGill, before stealing both second and third base in an at bat that resulted in a walk to Tommy Shaw. Shaw would then steal second base, and advance to third on an RBI single from Janssen, which scored Gibson. Niebrugge would follow with a single to score Shaw, 10-0 Millikin. The final run of both the inning and game for Millikin would come on an RBI groundout from pinch-hitter Kelby Golladay that scored Janssen to make it 11-0.

On the mound for Millikin was junior Drew Detmers. Detmers dominated over his 7 innings of shutout baseball, striking out six and walking only one. He also induced two ground ball double plays, killing any potential Benedictine rally.

Drew Sutton followed Detmers out of the bullpen, throwing a scoreless eighth inning with a strikeout. Christian Badorek would throw a scoreless ninth, striking out the last two hitters of the game.

Ryan Janssen had five RBI on the day for Millikin, and Kyle Gibson reached base 6 times (three hits, 3 walks), stealing two bases as well. Tommy Shaw reached base 5 times (two hits, two walks), and scored three runs. Liam McGill reached base three times and scored three runs. The Big Blue move to 5-3 on the season and will aim to take two of three on the weekend when they take on Knox College Sunday at 3 pm.
