Softball Opens Season with Four Wins in Edwardsville

The Big Blue softball team traveled to Edwardsville, Ill. and Plummer Family Park for four games as part of the Fontbonne Tournament. Millikin went 4-0 on the weekend, defeating Defiance College and Hanover College on Saturday, then Illinois College and the host Griffins on Sunday.

Against Defiance, Millikin recorded a 6-1 victory. A Leah Foreman single to left field plated the first run of the day in the third inning, and Kendallyn Davison later crossed the plate on a fielder's choice to put the Big Blue up 2-0. Defiance chipped away at the lead, scoring a run in the top of the fourth, but Millikin had an answer. In the bottom of the inning, an Anna Enlow triple to left center scored pinch runner Sarah Lahner. Enlow later scored when Kaylee Goluch laid down a sacrifice bunt. Foreman tallied her second RBI of the game with a single to plate Davison in the fifth, then the Big Blue added their sixth run of the game when Lanie Chizmark stole third and advanced home on a throwing error by the Yellowjacket catcher. Aly Armstrong allowed just one hit, striking out five to pick up her first win of the season. Charly Warlow entered the game for three innings of relief, also allowing just one run and striking out four.

Millikin took down Hanover in a five inning contest, recording four triples in the game to tie the Millikin record for most triples in a game. Chizmark was the first, scoring Goluch with her triple in the third inning then later scoring on an RBI fielder's choice bunt off the bat of Rylee Blake. To take a 3-0 lead, blake scored on a Davison single. On a Goluch bunt, pinch runner Zoie Bowman crossed the plate in the fourth, then another bunt off the bat of Blake, Enlow scored to put MU up 5-0. In the fifth, Foreman tripled to score Davison, then Zoie Bowman notched a triple to score both Aundrea Jenkins and Lahner. The Big Blue scored two more runs in the fifth on a Tennison RBI single and pinch runner Katie Detamore scoring on a wild pitch. Hanover would score one in the bottom of the fifth, but it wasn't enough to extend the game. On the mound, Addison Sargent picked up her first win of the season allowing just two hits and striking out eight. Kelsey Bruno struck out two in an inning of relief.

On Saturday, Millikin matched up against Illinois College, scoring both runs of the 2-0 victory in the third inning. Foreman doubled to right field to score Chizmark, then a Jenkins single to right plated Foreman. Sargent tallied a complete game victory to move to 2-0 on the season, allowing three hits and striking out 11.

In their final game of the weekend, the Big Blue took on the host Griffins of Fontbonne University. Foreman was once again an RBI provider, using a sacrifice fly in the first inning to plate the leadoff hitter Blake. The designated player Maddy Regan delivered a double to center to plate pinch runners Morgan Boward and Lahner to put the Big Blue up 3-0. A Davison double in the fourth kicked off the scoring in the fourth, then a Foreman double scored the second run of the inning to increase the lead to 5-0. Fontbonne added a run in the bottom of the sixth, but Millikin came away with the 5-1 victory to complete the 4-0 weekend. Armstrong added her second win of the weekend, pitching five innings and striking out eight, holding the Griffins hitless. Charly Warlow added four strikeouts in her two innings of relief.

Millikin will be back in action on Friday, March 10 in Newport News, Va. for the Cross Bay Bash where they match up with two other squads who made it to the final eight last season in Berry College and Christopher Newport University.
