Softball Drops Contests against Two Ranked Opponents on First Day of Cross Bay Bash

The Big Blue softball team traveled to Newport News, Va. on Friday, March 10 for two days of softball against ranked opponents in the Cross Bay Bash. On day one, the Big Blue matched up against #5 Berry and #1 Christopher Newport.

Against Berry, the Big Blue lost by a 1-9 margin. Berry catcher Anna Jackson hit a homerun in the first inning, then three runs in the second inning put Berry up four. Millikin rallied back in the third inning when Leah Foreman laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Rylee Blake, but Berry added five more runs on two homeruns off the bat of Morgan Frye and Blair Hall to end the game in six innings. Aly Armstrong was on the mound in game one, striking out seven, and Kelsey Bruno provided two innings of relief.

In game two, the Big Blue took an early 3-0 lead in the second inning as the visitors on the scoreboard. Pinch runner Sarah Lahner scored when Anna Enlow reached on an error by the Captains' centerfielder, then a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Kaylee Goluch scored two in Enlow and Maddy Regan. The Captains answered with a homerun in the third, but Regan recorded one of her own in the fourth to put MU up 4-1, then Enlow scored again when Emma Lewandowski reached on an error to increase the lead to 5-1.

But, in the bottom of the inning, Newport scored two runs, then three in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull off a 5-6 comeback victory over the Big Blue. Regan was 2-for-3 in the loss for MU at the plate, and Addison Sargent struck out seven in her six innings of work on the mound.

Millikin softball will look to bounce back on Saturday, March 11 when they travel across the bay to Virginia Beach, Va. for matchups with Transylvania and the #7 ranked host Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan University.
