Millikin Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Hanover

Big Blue baseball finished their weekend in Decatur with a split in their double header against Hanover College today at the Workman Family Baseball Field. The first game of the double header was played as a 7 inning game, while game 2 was a full 9 innings.

Hanover took game 1 by a score of 14-4.

On the mound for the Panthers was Marcus Goodpaster, who moved to 2-0 on the season with a complete game (7 inn.), striking out 8 and walking 4. He allowed just 2 earned runs (4 TOT) and 5 hits in the game.

The Panther offense put up 14 runs in the game on 13 hits, including 2 home runs from Reid Douglas and Alex Christie. They also took advantage of 7 walks from Millikin pitching.

Drew Detmers took the loss for the Big Blue, falling to 2-1 on the year.

Kyle Gibson drove in 3 of the 4 Millikin runs.

In game 2, Millikin turned the page to earn the split.

Junior Matt Wilson improved to 2-0 on the year, throwing 6 innings allowing 3 ER.

Drew Sutton followed Wilson out of the bullpen and worked out of trouble to keep Millikin in front. He struck out 2 over his 2 innings of work.

Aaron Agee pitched a scoreless 9th to secure the win for the Big Blue and his 4th save of the year.
On offense, Millikin racked up 15 hits off Hanover pitching, including 4 doubles.

Hanover jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 2nd, but Millikin responded with a 3-run bottom half of the inning to regain the lead. Sam Bushur and Liam McGill would both score on a Tyler Gade infield single, plus a throwing error from the Hanover SS. Tommy Shaw would score Gade later in the inning on an RBI double.

In the 4th, Gade would lead off the inning with a single. Kyle Gibson bunted him over to second, and after a walk to Shaw, Andy Niebrugge delivered the RBI single to score Gade. Ryan Janssen would follow that up with an RBI single of his own to extend the Millikin lead to 5-1.

Hanover would answer with 2 runs of their own in the top half of the 5th, but again Millikin responded. Tyler Gade doubled home McGill, who reached on a fielder's choice, to push the lead to 6-3. Gibson would then single him Gade for the 7th Big Blue run of the game.

A Hanover sac fly in the 6th made it 7-4, but Kelby Golladay would deliver an RBI single to center to score Andy Niebrugge, 8-4 Millikin.

The Panthers would threaten in the 7th, with a single and HBP to start the inning. A double off the right field wall would score a run, leaving runners on 2nd and 3rd, with 1 out and the tying run at the plate. Big Blue reliever Drew Sutton would induce 2 infield popouts to escape the jam, leaving the score 8-5 Millikin.

Sutton would throw a scoreless 8th before handing the ball to closer Aaron Agee, who sealed the win.

Millikin is now 10-5 on the season, and will face Illinois College for a Saturday double header next weekend in Jacksonville.
Hanover sits at 4-6 following this weekend's games
