Seventh Inning Surge Lifts Big Blue Softball over UWSP in Spring Break Split

The Big Blue softball team matched up against The College of Wooster and UW Stevens Point on Monday, March 20 for their second day of The Spring Games. After falling to The College of Wooster in the first game of the day, Millikin rallied in the seventh inning to down Stevens Point in their afternoon contest.

Against Wooster, the Big Blue took a 1-0 lead in the third when Lanie Chizmark singled to right field, plating Rylee Blake. But in the fifth, a bases loaded walk issued to Julia Jennings plated a run, then Cate Barkdoll sent a bases-clearing grand slam over the centerfield fence to give Wooster a four run advantage. Addison Sargent struck out seven in the 1-5 loss, allowing just four hits.

Against Stevens Point, Millikin once again struck first when a Maddy Regan single up the middle scored Chizmark. In the bottom of the second, the Pointers evened the score with a Jesse Klicker homerun to left center.

In the third inning, the Pointers threatened when back-to-back singles to start the inning put runners on first and third. A flyout off the bat of Trinity Otto caught by left fielder Aundrea Jenkins turned into a double play when UWSP's Sophia Heckendorf was thrown out at the plate. A looking strikeout ended the inning for the Big Blue defense.

The top of the fifth saw a scoring opportunity for the Big Blue. Kendallyn Davison singled to start the inning, then a fielder's choice off the bat of Lex Tennison and a sacrifice bunt by Jenkins put runners on second and third with one down, but Millikin could not convert after back-to-back flyouts.

Stevens Point's Allie Meyers led off the bottom of the inning with a single to left center, then advanced to third after a wild pitch and a groundout. Two batters later, Maddie Candre flew out to center, but a Pointer baserunning error by Meyers led to a Millikin double play and an end to the inning.

With extra innings looming in the future, Millikin saw Tennison and Jenkins draw consecutive walks. Kaylee Goluch reached on a fielder's choice with Tennison out on the play, but an error on a ball put into play by Blake loaded the bases with Lanie Chizmark at the plate. Chizmark delivered a bases clearing double just past the outstretched glove of Klicker to put MU up 4-1.

Millikin recorded a strikeout, a groundout, and a flyout in the final half inning to secure the victory and the split on the day. Aly Armstrong picked up the win in the circle, striking out nine while allowing just four hits.

The Big Blue will take two rest days before heading back to the Diamondplex in Winterhaven, Fla. for matchups against St. Catherine and Gustavus Adolphus on Thursday, March 23.
