Millikin Baseball Defeats St. Scholastica in Weekend Opener

The Big Blue began their first weekend in March with a 1-0 win over visiting St. Scholastica.

Drew Detmers got the start on the mound for Millikin, and pitched another gem on the heels of a 7-inning scoreless outing last weekend that earned him CCIW Pitcher of the Week. The junior from Chatham, Illinois threw 7.2 innings of shutout baseball, striking out 6 Saints.

The Millikin bats stayed quiet for much of the ballgame. Saints pitchers Wes Kemming and Payton Jeffries threw 4 innings a piece, each striking out 4 and walking 1.

In the bottom of the 8th inning, Millikin DH Kelby Golladay led off the inning with his 2nd walk of the day. After Trey Vorwald came in to pinch run, RF Sam Bushur sac bunted him over to second. Cayden Silvester would then step to the plate and lace a line drive to left field, but right at the left fielder for the 2nd out. Tyler Gade would then deliver a 2-strike single to center field to score Vorwald, giving Millikin the only run they needed.

Aaron Agee entered from the bullpen to close the game for Millikin, retiring the Saints to secure his 3rd save of the season, and Millikin's 3rd win in a row.

Sean Shook got the win in relief for the Big Blue, needing just 5 pitches to get the final out of the 8th inning. He improves to 2-1 on the season.

Payton Jeffries falls to 0-1, taking the loss for St. Scholastica.

Millikin will return to action tomorrow, taking on Coe College at 4:30 pm at the Workman Family Baseball Field.
