Baseball Wins Fourth Straight, Defeating Coe 7-1

The Millikin baseball team moved to 2-0 on the weekend after defeating Coe College tonight by a final score of 7-1.

After throwing a shutout yesterday against St. Scholastica, Big Blue pitching again held the opposition at bay today. Starter Caleb Buehrle threw 7 innings of 1-hit baseball, working around a 1st inning walk and 2nd inning HBP to strike out 11 Kohawk hitters, tied for the 2nd most of his career. Coe's 1 hit of the evening came on a 2-out opposite field home run from Reid Rausch in the 4th inning.

Sean Shook would pitch a scoreless 8th, and Max Simpson would close the game for Millikin, striking out 2 and walking 1, who he would eventually pick off of 1st base.
The Millikin bats took advantage of 5 walks from Coe starter, and 4 Kohawk errors to put up 7 runs.

Millikin jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning, when Tyler Gade scored on a passed ball. The Big Blue would stretch it to 2-0 in the 3rd on an Andy Niebrugge RBI single that scored Tommy Shaw.

After the aforementioned solo home run from Rausch, the game remained 2-1 Millikin until the bottom of the 6th, when the Big Blue broke the game open thanks to Coe defensive blunders and timely hitting.

CF Cayden Silvester delivered the huge 2-out, 2-RBI double to push the lead to 4-1. He would advance to 3rd later in the ensuing Tyler Gade at bat, then score on a wild pitch to make it 5-1 Millikin.

The Big Blue added the final 2 runs in the 7th, when Shaw would again be driven in by Niebrugge, this time on an RBI double. After catcher Ryan Janssen reached on a dropped 3rd strike, Niebrugge would score on a botched pickoff attempt for Millikin's final run of the evening.

Millikin improves to 8-3 on the season with the win, and Buehrle gets his first win of the season in the decision.

Coe falls to 1-2, with starter Nolan Schroeder taking the loss.

The Big Blue will be back in action to wrap up the series tomorrow when they take on #6 ranked UW-Stevens Point at the Workman Family Baseball Field at noon.
