Baseball falls in extras to #6 UW-Stevens Point

The Millikin baseball team pushed #6 UW-Stevens Point to extra innings on Monday, March 6 at the Workman Family Baseball Field, but fell in the 10th inning by a final score of 4-2.

Millikin starter Matt Wilson held the potent UWSP lineup at bay in his seven innings of work, allowing only one walk and six hits. The Pointers pushed two runs across in the second inning, but were held scoreless in each of Wilson's 6 other frames.

The Millikin offense would manufacture a run in the third when Tyler Gade doubled home Cayden Silvester, who led off the inning with a single to center. UWSP would then catch Gade attempting to steal third, and strike out Kyle Gibson to keep the game at 2-1 Pointers.

After Wilson was able to keep Millikin in the game, the Big Blue offense tied the game up in the sixth. Liam McGill led off the inning with a single, which was followed by a walk to Gade. Gibson would then sacrifice bunt McGill and Gade over. Tommy Shaw delivered the game-tying RBI, scoring McGill with a sac fly to right.

The game remained tied through the next three innings. Aaron Agee came out of the bullpen for Millikin and threw two scoreless innings to push the game to extras, but the Pointer offense broke through in the 10th. They began the inning with back to back singles, and both runners would advance on a sacrifice bunt from shortstop Logan Matson. Millikin would intentionally walk the next batter to set up the force out at any bag, but a walk would bring in the winning run. UWSP added an insurance run when Jakob Boos reached on a fielder's choice to make it a 4-2 Stevens Point lead.

Millikin was unable to get a rally going in the bottom half of the frame, dropping the game by a final score of 4-2. Agee took the loss for Millikin, dropping his record to 0-1. The Big Blue now sit at 8-4 on the season.

Stevens Point completed a 3-0 opening weekend with the win. Pointers closer Sidney Ferry was the winning pitcher of record, his first of the young season.

The Big Blue will be back in action next weekend, when they host Hope College and Hanover College on March 11 and 12.
